Must I punch holes in the lids of pint jars?
    #482355 - 12/06/01 09:41 PM (15 years, 40 minutes ago)

Hello to all...

Do I need to punch holes in the lids of my pint jars... it's a pain in the ass... could I just loosen the bands or does this not allow the mycelium to breath?

Thanks,

EP

Have fun bending the needle so it goes up under the band, around the rim of the jar, and into the substrate.

Thats what the holes are for, I've heard of ppl not using them b4 though

razer why would he have to do that

im working on figureing that out right now. i was reading some posts about it a while back. so i figured i would do both to see what works better. what i know so far is when you have no holes the lids must be loose during pc, or you will find that it is a bitch to get the lid off.(vacuum)

I never put holes in the lids. Holes, tape, all uneeded. Just take the lid off and innoculate in a clean area.

And if the lids are on loose when pc'ing, you're gonna get steam in the jars and it'll turn you're substrate soggy and useless.

It 'should not 'be a bitch to get the lid off'. Just turn it, it'll come off fine.

yes it will be hard to get off because in essence you are canning. what is canning creating a vacuum for long time preservation. . do you take the rubber seals off????????
not the screwy thing but the actuall lid gets stuck on

See that rubber ring? It will melt a bit and 'seal' the jar for canning purposes. For our purposes, turn the lid upside down. I've been doing this for years, trust me, the lid will come off no problem.

So if you have the rubber lid upsidedown(to attatch to the lid, not the glass), and you have it on really tight while sterilizing the substrate, you don't have to punch holes in the lid? Doesn't it cause a problem with humidity in the jar? and it's ok to take the lid off after sterilization to inoculate it?
