Pint vs. Half Pint Jars

so I just birthed my first pint jars. and about half wouldn't come out easily. I had to take a knife to the edge (to break the suction on the bottom of the jar) and in some cases a cork screw. (yeah now I got a hole to add water to during fruiting) anyone else have this problem. and is this the reason people suggest 1/2 pint jars... BTW the jars were all pinning

1 pint jars are used only for whole grain like birdseed, millet, rye.. etc. they are in no way to be used with the pf tek.. that tek was designed for half pint jars only and will not work correctly with any other sized jar. read the tek, it says not to use full pints.

Dude! I don't know who the PF purist is that posted that first reply, but Hey, if they're pinning, it worked. Experiment to find what works bust for you. My suggestions are to 1. Not get the substrate too wet, and 2. Don't pack the substrate to much(especially in a large jar). There can both lead to a spot taking forever to colonize, if at all. Also, I just read an article (I think it was an interview) in which Pilocybe Fanaticus says rye grain produces less potent product than rice. But you might experiment with whole grain(rye, bird seed, etc) in a large jar, pint, quart, gallon(haven't tried that yet). Colonization is rather quick. Look to the Shroomery for ideas. But seriously either way, a little dry is better than a sloppy mess at the bottom of the jar that won't colonize. Oh yah, look into liquid mycelial innnoculation. Pinning is good.

Maybe this will help... I use Golden Harvest half-pint tall and skinny's. These jars don?t have quite the taper of Ball or kerr wide mouth half-pint's but have roughly the dimensions of a standard wide mouth pint on a smaller scale. The tall and skinny's that I use some times don?t want to give up the cake unless you rough them up a little. What I do is dump out the dry verm and replace the lid/band. I then tip the jar upside down and give it a good slam on a folded hand towel. This action shows my cakes I mean business and that I will not tolerate any insubordination. This usually gets the jar cake moving up/down towards the rim and usually is enough that my cakes slide right out once the lid is off. Hope this helps...

I've had sucsess with the pint jars as well.... but it did take almost 6 weeks to fully colonize. Make sure you buy the wide mouth jars as well, tappereed jars and the PF...BRF style cakes don't mix well.
