Idiotic Gun Laws
    #4772486 -

Since I drive through Maryland every so often, I figured I would apply for my concealed pistol carry permit. I don't carry much as I dislike the hassle of worrying about my gun, but it's nice to have for when you do want to carry. I went to the State Police and dealt with two of the most ignorant motherfuckers I've dealt with in their organization. I finally get the application and, reading through it, I feel extremely frustrated.

You have to give a REASON that you want the permit. I've always thought that this was a bit absurd, but with most states it's just a little block you write "personal protection" or some other blanket abstraction in. For this permit I have to have a DETAILED write up of why I want to carry a gun. Most of the reasons involve security forces or ex-police, so I'll be able to use the "security force" clause and get one. Here are some interesting things that I noticed on this bit of government bullshit.

a) Under "reasons" for a permit, one of the allowable ones is "Personal Protection". Then it gives the caveat "There must be documented evidence of recent threats and or assaults, supported by official police reports or notarized statements."

So after I've been assaulted, I can pick up my gun? Thats not exactly what I was hoping for in this situation. I was thinking more of a "prevent the assault" capacity.

b) The security requirements are absurd. I have to submit two copies of my fingerprints and three passport photos. I have no idea why all of this is required, but apparently it is.

c) The cost to submit is almost two hundred (non refundable) dollars.

d) Even correctional officers must show verification of employment and documentation of threats and assaults.

Then it comes to the question of being a "security agent". I do training in security and I offer myself as a 'head-hunter' for security agents and security guards. I don't have any employees, per se, but I do have a tax ID that I use and my company name is registered with it. Most of the security consulting work I do gets paid to this account, so I figure I can say that I'm a security agent. I might have to get my damn lawyer to fill out a concealed carry permit form. How absurd. Why is the United States so against people carrying firearms? I'm all for state government, but the state shouldn't be able to go against "shall not be infringed"

I agree that something is seriously wrong with our society and I'd like to carry a gun.

My point of view is scary, or the fact that we live in a sick society is scary? The only "point of view" I had was to agree with you. In a sick society, you need to be armed.

That point of view. I think that if i lived there and with everything i read on the net and see on the news id probably wanted to be armed as well cause i don't want to get killed by someone who is after my shoes (the thought alone).

But if you need to shoot others to be safe yourself must be a real dipper for your own feelings. But still i think that if those laws are changed alot off needles killings will go away but alas it will take quite some time to get rid of all the guns going around there.

see, do you think a criminal who wants to carry a gun is going to go through that whole application process, and write down "the reason i want to carry a gun is because when i break into someones home, i want to have it with me"

FUCK NO

i hate gun laws...only law abiding citizens follow them.

Off course not but if there are no more bullets ans guns for sale it will be allot harder for those kind of people to get them and the small petty thief will be disarmed because you need to have allot of decent contacts to get them than!

Now you can buy bullets at k-mart and thats really not helping i think.

You couldn't be more wrong. Do they sell marijuana or other drugs at K-Mart? Nope. It's called the black market; I'm sure you've heard of it. People are going to get guns in whatever way is possible for them. Would you rather law-abiding citizens not be able to protect themselves against those who purchase firearms in an illegal manner?

Right on dude. Maybe he didn't understand that he is the one who has missed the point of the entire thread.

people who are going to use guns to commit crimes aren't going to bother to get a permit to carry.

violent crimes involving guns perpetrated by CCW permit holders are incredibly, incredibly rare. they tend to be one of the most law-abiding groups out there.

Correct and its been proven that areas where ccw is allowed have lower crime rates.

Strange we aren't allowed to carry guns and we have maybe like 50 murders a year thats about 5000% less than america. And most of them are hardcore criminals who stepped out of line and off course the occasional loony that kills his family than himself.

I think i explained what i meant a bit wrong. Off course guns will be accessible to those who seek but do you really think a 20 year old burglar will get a gun here no way you have to be in contact with people higher up the ladder to get a gun here so its really not accessible to the petty thief.

But if you can buy bullets and guns almost everywhere now that a whole different story....So thats why it isn't all that bad too outlaw guns for civies

Well based on what you read in this thread, which clearly shows that legal gun owners are law abiding citizens, could it be that it might be another factor?

In America we value our freedom. So, "it isn't all that bad to outlaw guns" is in fact, extremely bad according to our ideals.

i wouldn't go so far as to say that... from what i've seen it's difficult to draw any conclusions about the effect that 'shall issue' laws have on violent crime rates. there's just too many competing variables. in the early 90's many states changed their concealed carry policies. you can get a permit to carry a gun in almost every state now. crime rates fell when this happened, but they also fell in states that don't allow concealed carry (at a comparable rate if i remember correctly).

what is proven is that the people who get a permit to carry a concealed weapon are incredibly law-abiding people, and that they commit very, very few violent gun offenses.... if everyone had the same rate, the US would have the lowest homocide rate in the world.

i think therefore that what is a fairly well-proven fact is that allowing people to get permits to carry concealed weapons does not increase the crime rate. it probably decreases it.

i see no reason then not to allow those who wish to get a CCW permit to do so. some people may find the idea of people walking around with guns repulsive, but that doesn't mean it should be illegal, considering the facts.

Strange that every household in Switzerland is required to have a gun(a machine gun at that) and yet they also have much fewer murders than us. There are obviously several factors you're not considering here. It's not guns. It's society.
