Pacific Northwest Cloned Cyans
    #4769540 -

A small project in Pierce County is coming to fruition...

I apologize for this not being more pictorial, but heres the general story:

A cyan in Seattle was cloned on agar. It then was expanded through WBS, alder sawdust, and alder woodchips.

In April, the fully colonized chips were mixed with fresh chips in a fairly conservative 1:1 ratio.  The mixture went in a roughly circular hole about three inches deep underneath non-cedar evergreens that helped provide shade and buffer moisture levels.  A thin layer (~0.5 inch) of local soil (from the hole just dug) went directly on the chip mixture. This step was done to make the patch more resistant to drying out, to discourage the interest of rodents/slugs, and to encourage beneficial interactions with microorganisms (hopefully promoting better, more even flushes).

The patch was left alone after this point until mid-September, when it was gently watered (it had already began fruiting, but was drying severely), and a ring of slug bait placed around it.

The pics are from Oct 1, and the patch is expected to be looking even better by now! I'll post some more if people are interested.

You should put this in the grow log forum. Nice grow.

Man those are nice! Any advice to give a would be grower of the wood lovers?

I had a patch of Cyans. They didn't make it, though. I noticed a couple of dog trotting away from my patch with a decidedly mellow demeanor and I thought I'd go take a look at it. The dogs (I suspect) had dug it up and eaten the mycelium. The wood chips were licked clean. At least they enjoyed them.

I now have cyans and azurs sitting in flower pots with a layer of soil on top waiting for next season.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

For Shymanta: Some things to keep in mind :

1) Expansion order is important--for best results I'd recommend grain -> sawdust -> woodchips. This insures you'll have the maximum amount of spawn in the littlest amount of time. Also, it keeps the amount of total grain down, which helps prevent contamination and keep later pests away.

2) Woodchip to woodchip expansion doesn't work very well or very slowly. Use a conservative spawn ratio when laying out your beds to insure fruiting next season, as well as less chance of weed fungi.

3) Slugs suck. Be prepared to deal with their attacks.

Good luck!

I am very interested in seeing more photos of these... they are very similar to the ones that grow here, P. subaeruginosa (the first and third pics in my signature), and I am eager to start an outdoor bed with them next time I get some prints. Excellent work!

Since I haven't updated in a while...

They are getting much larger lately and still consistently producing!

Sorry for the lack of an area shot; none turned out well. :frown:

Full size Bic for scale.

Enjoy:
