The 'counterculture' reminds me of a group of crewmembers on a ship who didn't like where the ship was heading so they decided to jump overboard and swim in there own direction. After swimming around for a bit, they realized that the ocean was simply too big for them to manage by themselves and crawled back onboard.

And Oregon.

Indeed.

I've gone to the Oregon Country Fair the past two years and I'm amazed at the wide diversity of people there.  Yet they all seem to fit within the category of "hippie."

I do believe I live in the hippie capital of the pacific northwest and maybe the nation.  They are just more people in the end. Not necessarily better or worse. Just a lot looser.

No one is as loose and relaxed as you dearest. You are more hippie than hippie. You're amazing. :flowerchild:

I'm south of Portland near the Oregon/California border. Portland is very nice for a large city. I used to live in Seattle for ll years but I wouldn't go back. I'd go to Portland first.

Right. I remember when humble colored love beads vanished and were replaced by gold-plated razor blades on gold chains. Long hair became coiffed, clothes became name-brand, and I held on to a passe identity. I finally cut my long pony-tailed hair in 1983, completed grad school and sought employment. Twenty years went by til I grew the hair out again. So-called minorities treat me less like 'the man,' Caucasian adults 20 years younger than me are afraid to think that I might be drug involved, so they make comments (like my school's principal) about getting ready to "rock-n-roll." Who knows what most people think about my refusal to wear anything but blue jeans (except on dress-up Mondays when I wear tan jeans)?

Langenscheidt's Pocket Dictionary by Merriam-Webster says:

hip-pie or hip-py
:a usu. young person who rejects established mores, advocates nonviolence, and often uses psychedelic drugs or marijuana; also : a long-haired unconventionally dressed young person.

I am no longer young, but otherwise, I seem to fit the definitions. I am a 'freak' inasmuch as I stand out attitudinally, I am an intellectual in a markedly non-intellectual Miami, and I have zero interest in sports of any kind (even though I exercise on Bowflex resistance and treadmill machines, do Yoga, swim), and generally feel isolated from any group identity not to mention alienated in time itself (I seem to be living in a time-bubble replete with spiritual enthusiasm, but social pessimism). *Sigh*

I think at this point, the word "young" needs to be dropped from that definition. I'd say a good portion of the hippies today are over 40.

what is counter culture?

--------------------
Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Yo Yo

Greetings from New Zealand. I'm only 27 but I'm sure I'd qualify as a hippie.
Times are tuff, people are closed minded but I try to carry on my way.
I'm sure I's a hippie in my last life, have many inklings!
Lots of 'alternative' people here, lots of 'anti-establishment' angry people but few that carry with those 'anti beliefs', true hippy ideals.
Those people tend to hide out and only appear at some good festivals dub, reggae, roots.

Yes - people seem to be more concerned with looking good, rather than being a nice person and is reflected in drug choice.
Might have to infiltrate the water supply with some Liquid Societal Derangement fluid, scare the shit out of them and then show them the light. Nah - .
