Not the same at all. If he had continued to be frightened of the men even after he discovered their intention was not to attack, but to invite him to a party, then he would be irrational.

Likewise, if the child was capable of understanding that he was being rescued, not attacked, it would be irrational to continue to fear his rescuer.

pain is just too much:

it can be too much pleasure
or too much fun
I can perceive that swami is
and likely will be
until relieved

Just because Swami's intention was good doesn't change the boy's feeling the pain, associating it with Swami, and fearing him after that.

Yes, the fact that other people develop delusional programming that does not reflect the reality of its environment and what is occuring means that we must alter how we go about being ourselves and experiencing existance, thus contaminating their further experience by never allowing their delusional thought processes and associations to be challenged and made aware of.

Reality stands on its own and no person with their own attached meanings and interpretations of that reality are going to be able to stand agansit its truth. Any experience of mental suffering? That's your mind ignorantly struggling agansit the rip tide known as reality and its flow. Open oneself to reflect reality as we can directly perceive it.

If I should die this very moment
I wouldn't fear
For I've never known completeness
Like being here
Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you

It seems to me that fear of the unknown which later manifests itself into something that shouldn't be feared was still fear of the unknown.

But is it irrational to continue to fear what we learn is harmless?

Yes, assuming we learn it is harmless. Most people never learn.

Can the ones who believe it is harmless be mistaken?

I believe this has been played out countless times before.

Something I've seen in many movies, TV shows, read in books. The exact way it works doesn't matter, it's all just different ways of getting the same (often humorous) message across.

Person A makes some kind of attack towards Person B. Person B reacts angrily, until it is realized that they were not the target of the attack -- a third party, unseen by and unknown to Person B, was the target. Person B merely was in close proximity to the danger, and mistook the action for an attack on themself, not as an attack in their defense.

If B was too stubborn and refused to turn to see what A was claiming was the true aim of the attack, B would never realize that A was acting in B's own best interest. B would continue to believe they were attacked by A -- never realizing that they were not, that they were in fact protected by A.

he possibly knows on a rational, frontal lobes level that you saved him, but can't shake the trauma on some primal, base brain level seeing you stirs up PTS so he retreats.

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

no matter how bad we think our suffering is, we will always be ignorant of how bad it could be...
