My ex used to do it. It would tear me apart thinking about the pain she must've been feeling inside, and I tried my damn hardest to get her to stop. I succeeded for a while, and she really did seem to get better. But after we broke up, she went back to doing it. It still brings tears to my eyes thinking about her doing it.

Read Steven Levenkron's book Cutting. It is actually written for clinicians, but perhaps it would help bring your submerged conflicts to consciousness. I deal with adolescent cutting all the time and have had to take an ambulance or police car ride with a middle school student on occasion.

Cutting, which, despite websites that support the practice, is pathological in nature and is treated by showing an individual how to translate feelings into words, and then the verbal expression of these feelings instead of the translation of feelings into impulsive and self-injurious behaviors. Levenkron discusses the dissociative type cutter as well - the more disturbed type. Disturbances however are able to be corrected if desired. Also, cutting is not something that healthy individuals look for in a partner, assuming that one desires a healthy partner. I further recommend Hatha Yoga as a psychophysical means of applying uncomfortable amounts of pain that is not detrimental to health, followed by a profound sense of relaxation and relief from internal stressors - including the psychological ones that would otherwise result in one cutting oneself.

May I suggest tattoos as an alternative for releasing your pain-addiction?

And Elly, perhaps with the help of your vivid imagination and a fine tattooist, you can find a creative solution to your dermatological-cosmetical distress.

I feel absolutely no guilt. Why should I. It's my body. Mine. And I'll do with it whatever I want to. If I want to destroy it, I have that perogative.

Well, that's what the fierce side says, anyway. While it's happening.

I don't know how I feel about it anymore. I've stopped caring about it, really. I used to feel a sense of shame, but now I just feel apathetic, like "so what."

I don't want to waste time and energy worrying about it after it happens.

Although the other day, at work, my new salon manager asked me point blank, "So what happened to your arms? I don't remember you telling me."

Me: "I didn't."

Her: "Oh?"

Me: "Uh..."

(scrambling for something to say...anything...)

"...It's self-inflicted, actually."

The words were out of my mouth before I could really say anything else. All the lies seemed inadequate I guess, because I WANTED to be honest with this woman. I am tired of lying to people.

She said, "Oh really?"

And I said, "yeah...I tell customers it happened from a dog."

Her reply, "I would say it happened in a fire."

And I couldn't respond. I just sort of nodded...because here was my new salon manager giving me advice on how to better lie to people about my self-inflicted scarring.

I thought that was weird. But today when one of the academy stylists asked me what happened to my arms, I blurted out, "A fire."

So there is a part of me that feels shame still.

Although to be honest, I am just tired of worrying about it. Why should I care anymore. If it keeps me here on Earth to fulfill my purpose...then fine. I won't let it take me over again. Everything in moderation. It only happens when I freak out anyways.

But yeah. I get very angry when I encounter people who dare to claim I am doing something "wrong" by harming my own body.

It's MY body. Who better to harm it but me.

Those are some of the most awesome tattoos I've ever seen.

But I don't have an addiction to pain or anything. All in all I don't really like pain.

Cutting has become a huge thing in america. I have never done it outside of Jackass type stuff, but i know a lot of people that do. I even spyed on a person doing it once.

Seems to me to be a physical manifestation of self pity/punishment. I watched in awe as the person went from being angry with themselves to crying pathetically.

I have also heard people say it makes them feel real. Going from day to day , finishing the week and starting it all over again, being ignored or misunderstood (but who isnt?) and gives them soem sort of instant gratification of reality in some way.

Well the pain part was in response to the original poster. The second part of my post where I referred you, was more in response to your scars... I'd recommend you check out tattoos as an option for artistic cover-ups. Try to find who's *the* tattooist in your area, and see what you can do for yourself. A good tattooist will come up with plenty of clever and effective cover-ups - this is part of their job. A concept not many people seem to grasp.
Just a suggestion.

I've done it for about a year or so. I used to cut up my hands cause they got some thick skin and I got scars all over them cause I used to skate. I quit after about a year and I just realised I wasn't getting anywhere. It doesn't solve your shit it just takes the mental pain away for a few hours.

I was calling with my gf last night and she was feeling fucked. So she said I might go cut myself after you hang up. So I kept talking to her and trying to make her feel better and all of a sudden she told me (with a sad voice): I have to go now, I just gotta do it!

Fuck it scared the shit out of me! I know that it can do serious damage so I kept calling her untill she answered. She told me: Fuck you you made me stop! But after talking with her for another hour she was happy that I called. Jusy try and cheer people up, it ain't gonna hurt you or her/him. It can only do good!

You ancle is the last place I would cut myself. The skin there is pretty thin and there are some vains running around there. You got quit a chance of doing SERIOUS damage there. I would suggest (well I wouldn't but IF) that you cut on your arms, upperlegs or your hand. I used my hand cause it was pretty fucked anyway. Try and cut on spots that no one will notice...

But still please try to stop it! It ain't getting you anywhere!

Well, Its part addiction to the pain, and part addiction to the actual action. I have considered tattoos, but this is going to sound funny

They are too permanent for me
I supose Id feel better living with scars than tattoos.
A SI scar feels more natural than a picture on my body, plus I am too fickle to find something that I absolutely love and will continue to love while its on my body
(although its a really good idea)

When I cut it gives me something to tend to, to look at when Im feeling really fucked with.

I suppose i can say Ive been trying to stop it b/c I havent given into it for months, but to stop all together is a massive step. By denying myself the ability to cut myself when Im really upset, I really upset, could make it worse. When Ive had the inability to cut myself I've only given myself the opportunity to behave MORE erradically (spelling?), and Im truely afraid to turn myself into a blackhole like that again because I feel it lingers worse than scars, and when you start manifesting suicidal tendencies, it starts to blur the lines too much and can be extremely difficult to get over.

Although I do feel upset about it afterwards, its more of a lethargic upset then a crazy cant get a grip on life upset. And lethargy can be much more easily handled than the latter.

I never thought about that before...that would be a huge committment if I were to tattoo over all my scars...I'd have to be sure that's what I wanted. But I can see how it would help me "move on" so to speak...great idea, thanks.

I had burned myself a few times back in high school when going through tough times, especially relationship troubles.

I'd heat up something like a metal paperclip with a lighter, and then hold it against my skin.

Slicing through my own skin and the blood ech, I could never cut. Burning was a real rush.
