cutting...Why?
    #6740348 -

I guess im just posting this because im curious on anyones
opinion on why people cut themselves. Not like because they are depressed or stuff like that, But how does it satisfy them?

What benefit do they "feel" from self inflicted pain

its not like I'm knocking it or anything (even though i think its kinda pointless), just curious as someone I
care about deeply does it and she wont let me dive in her head.....
but thats a whole other story.

so whats your take on it?

I had a very short period where I cut myself. If I was depressed enough I couldn't feel the pain, just the feel of the skin ripping and the blood coming out. There's a feeling of release, tension and anxiety slip away and the feeling of being alive and being immersed in the present moment are increased. There's a sense of freedom, the fog in the mind clears, it can feel a bit like waking up from a dream. That's what it felt like for me, I'm no expert on the subject. I'm sure people do it for different reasons, some may just do it for attention, a cry for help, or to fit in with a group.

People do it because IT WORKS.  It provides a distraction from mental stress.  Some people also do it because they don't want to kill themselves, but they believe they need to hurt.  Some people do it because they feel out of control and believe that hurting oneself is a way to GET control.  Some people do it to express thoughts that they can't get their mouths to utter.  Some people do it out of frustration, anger, or to bring themselves "back into their bodies" if they feel dissociated.  These are all reasons why I personally spent the vast majority of my teen and adult life self-injuring.  The last time I did it was 2-3 months ago.  I am 24 and have struggled with my impulses to injure since age 12.   Whatever.  It's a personal thing and I just don't think about it anymore.  Sometimes I snap and it just happens.  Other times, it's like I wake up, see the scars and I'm astonished, like there's no WAY I could be the person who did that.

Either way, it's nothing to be ashamed of.  It is just an external  manifestation of an internal issue.  The best thing you can do in my opinion is give her space and tell her that you'll be there for her if she needs to talk.  If it's hard to speak, then gently suggest her writing you a letter about how she feels.  Do a search on the internet man, there's all sorts of information about this type of shit out there.  When it started for me a decade ago, it was still a relatively new and unheard of thing.  Now it's pretty common and you hear about it all the time so there's lots of support out there for both of you guys.  And if she can't talk to you, maybe finding SOMEONE she can talk to, a therapist or something.  Self injury CAN be dangerous, and you don't want her to slide even further down the slippery slope of total self-destruction.

I really feel for people who cut, because I've been there, but I am totally not equipped to give advice about it, simply because I don't give a shit about it.  If it happens, it happens.  If not, that's fine.  Each day is new and different and I handle it different ways.  I'm learning new ways to cope with overwelming emotion, but it's taken me years to get as far as I did, and there are always setbacks.

Your girl needs to find a different way to cope that isn't destructive to her wellbeing, but she needs to be WILLING to open up and try other alternatives.  Like I said...find her someone to talk to.  Show that you are concerned, but don't hover and be all annoying about her safety even if you are and whatever you do, don't try to shield her from sharp objects. If she wants to cut, she'll do it.  You don't want to force her to get creative with what she uses.  Or I don't know, she might need you to hover in order to feel safe, I don't know her.

And I know it's hard on you too...but you can't feel responsible for her.  She makes her own choices.

Good luck.

One reason is that cutting probably releases endorphins which are the body's internal pain killers. Other than that I can't speak to it as it is so foreign to me.

Back in 4th grade i put my initials on my arm. Nothing deep didn't last to long. Was just bored in class and tired of having to wash my desk off everyday.

Then i started learning about old school tattoo, like ancient tattoo that dates back thousands of years. Small symbols and designs, done by hand dot by dot. Or by using a sharp stone and slicing the skin then rubbing pigment into it. Then i learned about the Chinese and the Polynesians, and the people from Borneo. The tribes of the equator, and the tribes on north America. There forms of body adornment and modification. Hell thats all i was interested in when i was younger. I thought I'd be some tattoo artist. Not of the traditional sort, but the almost lost traditional sort. I did some ink on myself. Did it with two sticks and a bone point. But then decided to use a 7magnum needle bar instead of the bone point.

To some people it's a form of expression. Tattoo is different then cutting. But i think they may share some connections.

There is expressionism and there is mutilation. But I suppose that is all in the eye of the beholder.

Cutting is not always about suicide. And I think posting that pic here is really in bad taste and violates the forum rules.

that picture isnt about suicide either. It has a point regarding cutting for attention.
and no, im not saying all cutting is for attention, but that picture obviously is.

sorry Moth, everything I type in this forum is for some reason against the rules, although there must be a different set of rules im not aware of. My threads get moved, my posts edited or deleted....

I am public enemy #1 here. The emotionally fragile and the victims of life assume the fetal position when they hear my voice. "NO!!! he isnt going to tell me what I want to hear!".

Dude, that has nothing to do with it and I honestly hope you don't really believe that.  If you wanted to post about cutting for attention you could have done that easily and allowed people to discuss and perhaps learn from the discussion.  Instead, you just wanted to post your shocking pic to make your discussion for you and my response to that is that this forum IS for people who may be in a fragile state and seeing a pic of self-injury can trigger negative feelings in people.  Just read Geokills thread at the top of the forum.  I hope you continue posting here.  Many times your approach has been beneficial to myself and others.  Maybe you just weren't aware of how some people who self-injure are extremely triggery and sensitive to images of that, especially when in a vulnerable state of mind.  I only know because I was there once.  Nowadays, pics like that don't bother me much (I've seen much worse) but that pic WAS the last thing I would expect to see in this forum.

I'm not a moderator here and could not begin to interpret the situation regarding the rules of this forum, but I do think it is interesting to read the discussion regarding cutting oneself and then see the physical actuality of doing so. Its a very realistic observation of the phenomenon, in my opinion - that is what it is.

You have to consider how the pic will effect those readers who are checking out this thread and who may be struggling with the phenomenon themselves.  Allow me to elaborate:

Among "cutters" and those people who attempt to treat them, there are specific "triggers" which can instigate a desire to harm oneself.  Anything can be a trigger, emotions and specifically, images of self-injury.  I belonged to a forum designed for people who struggle with self-injury for many years and images of the deed WERE NOT allowed for a reason.  It is just too upsetting for many who are deep into it to see a picture of an open wound and can trigger ones own desire to manifest wounds.

Of course, if you personally have never struggled with self-injury, I can see how it would impossible or at best difficult to relate.  Nonetheless, all of my psychologists took triggers seriously and did their best to work with them.

It's not just a "phenomenon."  It's an actual emotional issue that people are physically manifesting.  I mean, show some sensitivity to the issue, that's all I'm asking.  The pic is unecessary and I believe it is even cruel flash pics of open wounds in this thread considering the nature of triggers.  If you don't know what "cutting yourself" looks like and you need a graphic picture to show you, then I think you are seriously lacking in imagination.

The picture doesn't belong in this forum, in my opinion.  I come here to be free of the insensitivity that permeates the rest of the site and yeah, I do let my barriers down when I come in here and so do many other people.  I DO believe it is a tasteless attempt to diminish issues surrounding the nature of self-injury, further evidenced by the fact the poster in question admitted to using the pic to elaborate how some people cut for atttention.  Some people DO cut for attention, that is not disputed.  What I do dispute is a use of a graphic picture which could be harmful to a sensitive mind, in a forum DESIGNED to help people who are in a sensitive space.  Let me put it this way:  someone who is seriously struggling with self-injury has it effect their life in practically every way.  I know people who won't fly on a plane because they can't bring blades with them and they need the blades and wounds to distract from the anxiety attacks they suffer when they fly.  I know people who can't leave the house or eat at a restaurant without wounding themselves.  I also know people who cut hundreds of times a day, deeply, to the point where they can barely walk.  I was one of those people.  If I saw a pic like this when I was in that space, when self-injury was already controlling my life (and it does if you're deep into it) it would be impossible for me not to think of my own injuries, and any thought of injury while you're in that horrible mental state can instigate the desire to cut.  It can be a sick obsession and it takes time to train the cutter's mind away from self-injury as a solution to any stress experienced.

IF THERE IS ANYTHING the picture has done, it has allowed me to go even deeper into the nature of cutting and describing triggers.  I did not wish to do this, but I guess it's done.  That is a triggery picture and one that would not be allowed on a self-injury forum like the one I was a part of.  This is the Shroomery, and a different place, but I believe the picture has nothing to do with support, which is what this particular forum is about.

As for cutting for attention:  haha, that's a funny one.  People who are obsessed with wounding themselves and have a serious problem are people who will cover it up to hide their issue, usually because they are ashamed and anxious that some ignorant soul will just claim that they are showing wounds for attention.  I lived in Texas, with temperatures often in the 100's,  and I wore long sleeves every summer for a decade to hide my wounds.  My wardrobe didn't contain any shirts with short sleeves and it was a standard thing to just sweat and suffer through the heat every year.  It was only until I entered adulthood two years ago that I realized I did not give a shit anymore and that I was just going to wear what I wanted.   People could think whatever they wanted about my scars but I wasn't going to be afraid of reactions anymore.  In fact, if they had a problem with my injuries or scars, they could go fuck themselves.  It was incredibly liberating to spend my first summer without long sleeves.  I got many odd glances and rude comments, but who the hell cares, I wasn't burning up inside of sweaters while the temperature soared.

So anyway, I just know that some people who cut are unprepared to deal with images of their own acts.  And since this thread was about cutting in a support oriented forum, I see nothing useful about that picture at all, knowing what I know about triggers.

Whatever.  I've spent enough time in OTD and with my own wounds to desensitize myself to graphic stuff like that.  aka: seeing a pic like that doesn't trigger me, but I am a sensitive person and because I've known many other "cutters" I know what can trigger others.  I feel that the pic was just posted out of ignorance.

I'm not even debating and I'm not going to get into a stupid debate about the picture.  I don't think it belongs and I believe I've adequately expressed that.

I'll let the mods of this forum decide from here and their decision will also notify me as to if this forum is actually still intended to be the safe haven and sensitive place that I remembered it to be.

so, before i type, I must catalogue any intentional/unintentional connections to anything deemed "bad" for the sake of the people who wish to immerse themselves in the public, yet want that public to adhere to their framework of reality and abide by a list of do's and don't(s) that is needed for them to keep their fragile emotions from shattering?
If this was a thread made by someone asking for help regarding cutting themselves, my post would have been out of line, but a light-hearted discussion on the matter does not warrant your panties getting in a bunch.

Ok, you have an empathetic spot in your heart regarding cutting. understood.
But if some random stranger posting on an internet forum, a picture of self-inflicted scratches on a persons arm, drives a person into an uncontrollable pursuit of self-mutilation, then frankly, they aren't going to hack it in this world.
Turn off the news, dont visit hospitals, blindfold yourself when you remove a bloody tampon, dont watch ginsu knife commercials, razor blade commercials..... just shut yourself off from the reality of the world so that it is more manageable.
I couldn't give two rat turds in a bucket if you do that, but please dont attempt to restrict my methods of communication (and at times, what I deem helpful comments) because you cant confront reality.

I dont need to relate to this issue (in this context) to make a point. This forum isnt the empathy/sympathy forum. it isnt the "I know what you are going through" forum.
When it comes to this, i will admit that my seemingly asshole filled posts are out of line and innappropriate.

then lets just ban all pictures in this forum. Because if we were to take into consideration all possible images that could possibly be triggers for all possible abnormal behaviour, and ban those, there wouldn't be any pictures left.
Dont post pictures of nature, we might trigger the agoraphobics to convulse or become hysterical.
Oh, but Im being ridiculous now right? You have bias towards cutting, and you think it is a much more serious issue that debilitates young people all over the world... but it isnt any more special than all the other self-proclaimed victims of the genetic dice or their shitty life.

see, my picture has been a catalyst for (supposed) good.

1) this forum isnt solely about support, and every post does not have to conform to being "supportive".
2) this forum is also an avenue of third party discussion, such as this thread, where someone is asking about cutting.
While you do have far more knowledge and first-hand experience on the subject, it doesnt make your personal judgement of what is endangering fragile people a precedent.

Quote:

it is, but maybe my presence, and your perception of my presence, has disrupted that.
Like i have said in another thread in this forum, you go about your way of helping people, and i will go about mine.
if the mods decide that i am in fact being malicious, then that is for them to decide and me to bitch about.
I dont go around attacking other peoples methods while claiming my route is superior. Let people decide for themselves, what to censor, or not censor themselves.
If I feel that my point is given by posting the picture in question, or that I am helping by telling people they are responsible for their own actions, thoughts and lives, then disagree with it and move on, but dont attempt to single me out as malicious or inneffective and stifle my input on this forum.
If you are here to help and support, do that instead of attacking and accusing others of insensitivity and cruelty.
This is primarily a support forum, not a "you are wrong and inneffectual" forum.

I didn't attack you in anyway, or meant to, and if you perceived some kind of attack on your level of sensitivity then I apologize because that wasn't my intention at all.  No need to get defensive.   And I certaintly cannot "stifle" your input on this forum.  If only I had that type of power...  :tongue2:

In the end, it's just a picture, and you do bring up a good point about this not being a "fluffy bunnies and huggles" type of forum.  That's actually why I left the self-injury forum to begin with.  Way too over the top with sensitivity.

It's possible I was being a trifle too sensitive to the issue myself, which is usually why I try not to respond to these types of threads to begin with because people don't seem to have the same level of sensitivity for the SUBJECT that I do.  Nonetheless, I still feel the pic was inappropriate for the forum, and particularly this thread.  You don't find pics of hanging corpses in suicide help threads either and if someone did post about their struggle with any type of phobia I do feel that posting pics about the subject of their phobia in the thread created is cruel and insensitive.

Exactly, graphic pics of any kind should be kept to OTD.  Even the Pub has more flexibility with the rules then this forum, from my personal observations.
