pre-soaking grain made it sprout!
    #458163 - 11/14/01 01:44 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

stamets says that pre-soaking your rye grain for 24 hours will hatch endospores. it made my friends grain sprout after about 18hrs. is this bad? should my friend toss it out and go back to old methods??

Toss it. Try pre-cooking. Bring water to boil, pour in rye, simmer 45 mins, (stirrying occasionally) or until you see a kernel split open. Strain thoroughly. Then put in jars and PC.

I once left my grain for two weeks and it sprouted with lots of roots and leaves so I made a new batch but also sterilized the sprouts for comparison. The sprouts colonized quicker and did better than the fresh grain.

Are you sure that it was 24 hours? I've always heard 12 hours or so is sufficient.

try useing it anyway, comeon.. try something new (to you).. in many cases, presprouting your grain can result in better yeild/success..

It happened to me too. It happens if the temperature is fairly high.
I?d say: if you MUST presoak for 24 hours, put the jars in fridge after 12 hours, otherewise presoak only for 12 hours.

I doesn't matter. If it starts to sprout, just use it. It'll work just as well.
