    #350828 - 06/28/01 01:29 PM (23 years, 8 months ago)

I just soaked my whole brown rice for 24 hours. it dosent look the same as after being cooked, still much smaller. Will while brown rice not work with presoaking? nof not then i need to cook it soon and it's mixed with finch seed, how much water per pint of fince seed do i use? i know 1 pint whole brown rice = 1 pint h2o. Thanks for any help.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, there's no need to pre-soak your rice. I just take one part whole brown rice to one part verm, then saturate, boil for one hour, and voila, an excellent fast-colonizing substrate. The rice will become soft during the boiling/pressure cooking process and then absorb all excess moisture, making your substrate externally pretty dry and (so my theory goes) particularly resistant to bacteria. For me this recipe reaches complete colonization in about 14 days.

Hello Scourge:), My friend has tried the mixing of birdseed and brownrice, but the moisture content never seems to get right. And presoaking the rice is just an extra unnessasary step. Just cook the whole brown rice, then add some vermiculite to keep things airy and non-sticky. Next pressure cook, and innoculate.
