What does it feel like for a computer to...........
    #4537579 - 08/15/05 11:17 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

....ride an 85 mile an hour roller coaster?

....to scuba explore one of the world most pristine coral reefs?

....to dance to music?

....to laugh at it's favorite comedian so hard tears pour from it's eyes?

.... can a computer choose it's favorite comedian?

..... play with it's new puppy or kitten?

.....to take a raft down some wild river rapids?

.....to party with best friends?

.....can it choose a best friend?

......to feel the wind in its hair cruising in a convertible or on a motor bike?

......to listen to it's favorite music?

......can it choose favorite music?

..... look into its baby girls eyes for the first time?

..... soak in a hot tub after a day of gratifying yard work?

.....get its drivers License and first car?

.....graduate from high school or college?

.....sleep in satin sheets

.....cozy up to a warm fire on a snowy night

.....get a warm oil massage?

.....hike Kauai's' Napali Coast?

.....have a friend that loves it no matter how much it crashes?

Why bother wondering. A computer will never know what these experiences feel like. We can and do.

It's great to be a human being. I've been wondering why I have been looking at the brain like a computer and the body like a machine. It's not. I can act like a computer, be all logical, analytical and data processing oriented. I can go through preprogrammed mechanistic motions, create my own programs to run on, detached from them and unfeeling.

I can be like a computer or a machine, yet a computer or a machine can never be like me. We can make the tiniest computers be packed with more data than most humans will accumulate and machines that can manufacture product faster then we can by hand. Yet, there is soooooo much more, computers and machines will never know or be able to do that I can know and do.......and that is, what it feels like to know and experience such things.

That's awesome to contemplate.

feel free to add some of your most memorable "favorite" feelings.

hahahaha.I just thought of the first time I put pop rocks candy in my mouth.

I'd love to read through a long list of them from others

A computer will never feel agonizing pain as it slowly dies due to cyanide poisoning...

A computer will never feel rejection and intense sorrow when it's father beats it for not doing well in school...

A computer will never feel the almost unmanagable pain of losing a love one when he could have prevented it...

A computer will never feel the terror of being left alone in a shopping center when its parents accidently forget it there...

Heh, I kid a little, but there's always two sides to the coin. I think this relates to your balance thread...

Some would argue that the worst emotions are a small price to pay for the best ones...

Others would say giving up the best ones is a small price to pay to getting rid of the worst ones...

Me, I don't have an opinion on it

 Those are some strangely articulated sentences, there, Jiggy.

What you are expressing here is that of The Experience, and I do believe that could be related to as being the Holy Spirit in the Trinity that you propose....

A computer will never know what these experiences feel like. We can and do.

What if we are computers? Then, of course, computers (us) already know what all those things feel like.

These boxes of chips we call "computers" right now are very limited in function. They may not currently be able to "feel" as we more advanced models can, but that does not mean that they never will be able to. It's just a question of time and technology

I would place our most advanced computers today along the lines of insects - obviously incredibly primitive (from a cognitive and emotional perspective) to humans.

Indeed def, a computer will never know what those things feel like either.

Just realising that is a trip. Be it good feelings or bad....the feeling experience is what we can know and do computers and machines can't. Thats what this post is about, contemplating that.

I was going to add in some of the bad feelings we experience too but I got better lift off remembering the good ones for examples sake, so I did all good ones instead.

FW,

I didn't think beyond it to holy spirit. I did to spirit in general. When I typed the feeling experience of cruising on a moter cycle, that song born to be wild came into my head and I thought of the feeling of being free spirited.

Thats a great one!

A computer can't even know what it feels like to be head banging at a rock concert.  :hairmetal:

Thats another good one. Last concert I went to was RUSH. I walked into the stadium and was overwhelmed with emotion from the cheering crowed to the point of being choked up and when I first laid eyes on Geddy Lee, the man with this voice trippen me out for the last 30 years was like..........ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh What a RUSH!  A computer can't know that one either.

Like them in many ways. i can push things, manufacture things, haul things, use leverage and torque when lifting.

We are also so much more. i was trippen out on the more part that we can do that machines can't......feel experiences like I mentioned.

Like diving into a cool pool on a hot summer day.

That was funny how you just said we are far more advanced computer models then whats currently out there. I like that! You got the message! insects:lol:

So moog, what does it feel like for the computer to have it's lover run their fingers through its hair.

Oh man.......thats a great feeling too, having someone play with your hair. It's an equisite feeling. Makes ya feel like

A computer is not something alive that can experience. It can experience as much as rocks can

To say that human brain is a biological version of a computer is a simplification. The brain works on a much higher level os complexity than any computer machine can approach at the moment. The difference is similar to the difference between a 1 dimensional line, and a 3 dimensional model.

Simplification of what, the concept of a computer? Maybe our PCs are a simplification of us?

We are human beings and we are designing computers and machines to be more like us so they can do our work for us.

This post wasn't about discussing the similairities between humans and the computers and machines that humans designed and developed to work for them.

It is to remind myself and anyone, about what makes us different.

The biggest difference that matters the most to me is our ability to know what experiences FEEL like.

A machine can shift gears and bah for it. When I run through shifting the 6 gears of my car (designed and developed by humans to get us around more quickly)waaaaaaaaahoo I am rushing, thrilled and stoked up.

simplification of the comparison of brains and computers. It's not that simple comparing them. Their use is almost similar, but the mechanics of how they work is not even comparable.
