Best conditions to hunt for Liberty Caps?
    #451228 -

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the best weather conditions are for Psilocybe Semilanceata (Liberty Caps) to grow in. I know that fall is there groing season and I know what places they like to grow best in. What I have not been able to find out is what weather conditions they grow best in.

Mushrooms hunters here seem to think that a good frost will stimulate the growth of the Lib Caps. IFrom the reading I have done I believe that a good rain will stimulate their growth. I also cant find out what tempurature they grow best in.

Any help would be great!

I don't think they're all that fussy, except for liking WET weather--the fields have to be pretty soggy before they start to pop. In "good" years with steady rain I've found them continuously from late September to mid December. Cold, dry conditions in mid season retard fruiting, but they don't stop till the first hard frost.

Hey woodsman,
I know you are in Oregon..would you consider Oregon getting too cold for lib caps?  I am hoping it is not too late, but being a very inexperienced hunter I just don't know enough.  I thought I may head out towards the coast this weekend and look for Azurescens...apparently they can grow through December to even January.  Also, did you learn from just doing, or are there any good books to read?  I feel so novice and I hate that!  It is my first year in Oregon moved from Dallas, Texas...so this is new to me...I just know that I love shroomin' and I get a lot spiritually from it.  thanks, Woodsman!

Getting too cold inland--last few nights of frost are shutting down the Chantarelles in the forest--but it stays milder longer out on the coastal plain. Best of luck looking for Azures, Cyans, etc.--they should still be popping for a few weeks on the north coast, & probably just starting down around Coos Bay.

The real problem with libs anymore is finding a cow field where you won't get hassled or busted for trespassing. They are out there--all that stands between you & them is that farmer tired of people disrespecting his property & that sherrif's deputy looking to make his arrest quota.

I learned from both books & practical experience. Paul Stamets' "Psilocybe Mushrooms & Their Allies" (now out of print?) was essential reading when I got started, but the real learning came from countless hours of tramping around in fields & forests, sometimes alone & sometimes with experienced hunters, picking all kinds of mushrooms & training my eye to observe their fine details, then keying them out with the field guides. Didn't find any "magical" species till I'd been searching for a couple of seasons, but did learn to find a lot of good edibles and to recognize--and avoid--the bad poisonous ones. Just being out in nature & the fresh air, walking for miles & paying close attention to everything you see can be a spiritual "trip" in it's own right (well, a little KB makes it more so!) but if you learn the good edible species as well, you'll always "at least" find dinner & not feel too disappointed if you find no magic.

Enjoy the coast this weekend!

Yeah, cyans in Coos Bay two days ago. I am pretty excited since I have never found them outside of my cultivated beds.

just like woodsman said just get out there.ive spent countless hours every fall searching. sometimes its good, sometimes you get skunked. this season has been my worst season of my life.alot of my lib fileds have been dug up and this year the farmers dont seem to want people around anymore where i pick. so i have to do even more exploring.which is half the fun anyways.
