Liberty Caps found in Northen England

Conditions:

Ground is still very dry despite recent rain. High winds are drying out the liberty caps very quickly resulting in small mushrooms. Longer the conditions stay wet the larger the mushrooms seem to grow, I believe this is because they stop growing once they have dried. Mushrooms can be found in sheltered areas where the ground remains wet from recent rain. Larger mushrooms can be found in long grass well sheltered from the wind.

Tips:

The grass often hides many shrooms, when searching in long grass, search upwind and you will spot more mushrooms. Once you spot one get down to the ground and search that area for more.

Concentration:

There are less mushrooms than you would expect for this time of year in the UK, probably due to the lack for rain, of cause some areas will differ, but generally the lack of rain has significantly reduced the numbers expected at this time of year.

Pick Rate:

2 hours search has resulted in around 200 shrooms. Past years in same location resulted in around 1000 in 2 hours.

Another tip - don't search when the sun is out, as at this time of the year it is generally low down, causing each blade of grass to cast a shadow making shroom spotting much harder.

I just looked at the weather forecast again - no rain for at least the next 10 days  :eek:

Sorry pal but that's a terrible tip. I love to go picking when the sun is out and find 3-4 times as many. The reason for this is when the sun hits them and they begin to dry they go white and you can see them 30 paces away instead of looking at your feet. 2 weeks ago I went out on a dull wet day and found 120,then at weekend on a sunny day I found 650. The rain brings them out and the sun helps you find them.
