itstarssaddam: Cool. Conrad is a great author, especially when you consider how late in life he learned English. What context did Burroughs mention it in?

The short stories of Raymond Carver. A good place to start is the anthology Where I'm Calling From. I believe Cathedral is one of his more memorable ones.

In a lecture that I downloaded from archive.org, he compares and contrasts Lord Jim with Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby. The lecture is called "Creative Reading."

"Frederick" by Leo Lionni. My favorite book from childhood still packs a spiritual punch. My older son read it to his little brother last night.

I don't really bother reading much spiritual literature, but the Dali Lama is always a great read.
