"Fat Acceptance" Groups
    #4495745 - 08/04/05 03:18 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

It seems to me that such groups are rationalizing unhealthy behavior by "accepting" that they are overweight, as if they have no control over it. Do we see alcoholics going to alcoholic acceptance groups, or smokers going to smoking acceptance groups? No. They either drink or smoke, or they try to kick the habit. I have no problem with fat people. One of my best friends is fat. But he knows damn well that in order to lose that fat, he needs to work out and eat less. To "accept" that you are powerless over a Big Mac is a disgrace. I certainly am not without my vices. I happen to a fairly lazy person, but do I "accept" my laziness? No. If I did that, I never would've made it through all these years of High School and college. Instead, I recognize that I am lazy and work to overcome that. I see no reason why these "fat acceptance" people can't do the same with their weight problems.

One must accept ones nature in order to change. To live in a constant state of self loathing is nowhere, but to submit to a preventable fatal illness is weakness in it's worst form. There is a difference between acceptance and submission.

How generous...

I know of some overweight people, who eat very little, I feel bad that they pay in weight for every morsel of food. That cannot be easy.

Also the food industry works very hard to feed us empty calories that sap our strength and energy and will.  It's easy to keep people down if they are unhealthy and have no energy.  :frown:

I was once a member of F.A.G. and then later joined a Gay Acceptance Group (G.A.G).

My older girlfriend joined a Senior Acceptance Group (S.A.G.).

How far should I go with this? You want more? Okey-dokey.

More recently I joined the Shitty Hemp and Weed Acceptance Group. (S.H.W.A.G.)

More...?

I have tended toward heaviness my whole life. It requires much work to maintain a normal weight. I walk 3 to 5 miles a day when I am not engaged in any other physical activity. Overweight people are generalized as lacking discipline and being pigs...this is a generalization that is incorrect.

If you haven't seen the documentary "Super Size Me" then watch it.

My Norwegian ex was a member of both the Norwegian Acceptance Group and the Housewives Acceptance Group at the same time... (NAG, HAG)

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

"Housewives Acceptance Group"? Your ex? Didn't she accept being a housewife?
