Butterfly, Symbol of Spirit * 1
    #4472941 - 07/30/05 06:37 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

A transformation from a gross eating machine into a gorgeously robed free flying sipper of fine nectars takes place in the life of a butterfly. Between the two obvious stages (larva and fly), there is a resting phase, pupation, a time of refuge and keeping still while necessary and hidden inner changes take place.

In many cultures, spirituality is likened to this transformation.

Sometimes the metaphor can be used to great benefit, realizing a path of refinement from gross appetites via silent refuge towards liberation ? towards relatively unrestricted movement and beautified expression. In the process, the shell of the pupa is discarded.

While I find it less useful, the body itself is often considered the gross thing, death, the refuge, and a vague notion of a soul and heaven is considered the butterfly. (After all, a mortal shell is left behind ? it is an argument I can?t refute)

In life we should expect many transformations, there are many refinements, many opportunities where appetite becomes transformed to something fine.

An early butterfly experience many get to share is the transformation and liberation experienced when the training wheels come off the first bicycle. This is essentially very spiritual bringing the refinement of more unrestricted movement; the two discarded training wheels are tossed aside without much thought, two halves of a confining but supportive shell.

God doesn't ride a bicycle, silly!

He drives a sports car of His design and built to His exacting standards.

What if the caterpillar is not lesser than the butterfly, but instead beautifully designed to take in and digest the experiences which later allow the butterfly to ascend? Each bite the "gross" eating machine takes out of life builds energy toward the transformation.

Both are essential and necessary. To put more value upon one as compared to the other is baseless.

I find the 'resting' stage the most interesting.

in order to reach metaphorical freeedom (as a butterfly) - the caterpillar must first undergo complete physical detachment ('giving up' the world)

(it's like, freeing yourself of all desires leads to complete freedom )

The more interesting thing to consider, perhaps, is that all three stages are undergone by us throughout life, it isn't some linear process.

What, a butterfly takes shape in the womb, and so I suckled my mothers tit. Grown into what I feared I would become, the man beast killer sin slayer of doom. I reek in city sweat tumbling farther than I can fathom into deeper darkness to grow the soul of the devil in my belly.
And now, when a glint of hope speckles beyond clearer times, I see. I see your love, your light. I see the time you picked me up broken and beaten from the fight. I see the blood on your hands, to trickle down my face. To trickle down my soul itself, ancient in it's stone pillars and healing me from within, I rise.
Rise. Rise. Rose up. :sun:
