Travelling with unused bubbler on plane (Now with poll) :)

Does anyone have experience travelling with an unused bowl or bubbler on a plane? I am debating if it is a better idea to mail it. I'm also wondering if you were to travel on board with it, if it is better off in checked luggage or carry on. Any input would be appreciated.

it's not illegal, you shouldn't have any problems, unless there's some kind of rule about bringing smoking devices on a plane. put it with carry on. they throw checked bags around too much, and if they do suspect something and have to open it up, it's best for you to be there to say look, it's unused, and it's only going to be used for tobacco. it's not illegal.
mailing it would probably be a little better, just so it's not in your mind making you paranoid that you're bringing a bubbler on a plane with you. it would be a little less of a hassle. after all, as long as it's staying in the country it'll probably be $3.85 to ship it priority, just use a lot of bubble wrap and newspaper and mark it fragile. mailmen arent careful with packages. you could even put down an extra dollar or two to insure it just incase.

I'd just bring it on as a carry on.
You should be fine.
I've traveled with a used pipe a few times.

Have you ever brought an unused pipe and was questioned about it? I'm concerned with an argument I might have at the security check. I also don't want to give them a reason to cavity search me . Maybe I am overthinking this but it is an 8.5 inch bubbler.

You will be absolutely fine unless you have stuff in your cavities. IMO you will be fine no matter what. The real problem is that since they need no reason to "randomly" search ANYONE at an airport (thanks to 9-11), you are never 100% safe carying anything illegal onto a plane.
Your unused bubbler is 100% legal, however.

Sorry, that's how it used to be. But it's not anymore. Ever heard of operation Pipe Dreams and Head Hunter?
Sorry, but these people are incorrect. That pipe is illegal in the eyes of everyone running security in that air port. And it they find it, they are going to do something about it.
Un used pipes USED to be legal. They are no longer.

hmmm, shit. I called the TSA and they said that an unused glass pipe is not prohibited, but that upon inspection if it is found to be dangerous they will take action. I am not sure how all this crap is working since I just bought this damn thing from a store, meanwhile in Florida a shitload of glass was confiscated. This shit is weird, I guess I'm going to have to mail the sucker. Again, if anyone has recent anectdotes concerning this I'd realy appreciate it.
Also read: Drug paraphenelia DEA site It defines these as paraphenelia: (1) metal, wooden, acrylic, glass, stone, plastic, or ceramic pipes with or without screens, permanent screens, hashish heads, or punctured metal bowls;
(2) water pipes;
(3) carburetion tubes and devices;
(4) smoking and carburetion masks;
(5) roach clips: meaning objects used to hold burning material, such as a marihuana cigarette, that has become too small or too short to be held in the hand;
(6) miniature spoons with level capacities of one-tenth cubic centimeter or less;
(7) chamber pipes;
(8) carburetor pipes;
(9) electric pipes;
(10) air-driven pipes;
(11) chillums;
(12) bongs;
(13) ice pipes or chillers;
(14) wired cigarette papers; or
(15) cocaine freebase kits.
(e) Matters considered in determination of what constitutes drug paraphernalia In determining whether an item constitutes drug paraphernalia, in addition to all other logically relevant factors, the following may be considered:
(1) instructions, oral or written, provided with the item concerning its use;
(2) descriptive materials accompanying the item which explain or depict its use;
(3) national and local advertising concerning its use;
(4) the manner in which the item is displayed for sale;
(5) whether the owner, or anyone in control of the item, is a legitimate supplier of like or related items to the community, such as a licensed distributor or dealer of tobacco products;
(6) direct or circumstantial evidence of the ratio of sales of the item(s) to the total sales of the business enterprise;
(7) the existence and scope of legitimate uses of the item in the community; and
(8) expert testimony concerning its use.
(f) Exemptions This section shall not apply to -
(1) any person authorized by local, State, or Federal law to manufacture, possess, or distribute such items; or
(2) any item that, in the normal lawful course of business, is imported, exported, transported, or sold through the mail or by any other means, and traditionally intended for use with tobacco products, including any pipe, paper, or accessory.
According to all of this, wouldn't it be ok to transport it with a piece of paper with a pic of the pipe stating "TOBBACCO USE ONLY?" What sucks about the piece is that it has a big ol' 420 on it. frustrating...

Well, if you're boarding in Washinton or somewhere simular I wouldn't worry about it too much. But if you're boarding in Atlanta or something I would.
Be safe, ship it or something.

Color changing pieces (I believe) contain trace amounts of metal inside the colors. I believe it is enough to set off the detector, simply because cigarette packs and gum wrappers do.
Ask zippoz. He'd know.
I'd put it in my checked baggage, but it may break.
IMO, ship the piece.
Also, please do not post direct links to DOJ/DEA sites. Thanks all.

I called LAX today, and I described the nature of the pipe to them: 8 inch Glass unused tobacco pipe. They said so long as it is unused it should be fine. So that's directly from an employee at the security checkpoint.

You could always bring a small container of real pipe tobacco just in case to make it look more believable.
That's how we used to get around having papers without having to worry about a paraphenalia charge.

I am traveling with a wood tobacco pipe in a case with three types of tobacco. I wouldn't be concerned at all if it weren't for that damn arbitrary string of digits. I have left messages with a few attorneys that deal with marijuana laws and charges in California. Hopefully I will get a callback. I will be sure to post what I find out.
