My mycelium is burning itself up.
    #4386908 -

my room is 76 degrees. i added 1 gallon of WBS to 2.5 gallons of horse manure compost days ago. this morning the temperature inside the substrate reads 94.3 degrees.

Im not using anything to heat it. its doing this by itself. should i try to cool it down?

You certainly should...if not your gonna end up with alot of fermented poo. Such is the problem when using a large tub of bulk, and a very high spawn rate, more activity, more heat geneterated, more cooling needed.

Hmmmm....

What about straw, does it create as much heat?...

My Q is it the sub. that helps create the heat or just the myc. its self?

I ask b/c I've got some big bags of wbs going and It'd be nice to know If I should lower the temp. :smirk:

Substrate and the myc...straw is one that doesnt, at least in any beds I've seen or dealt with...maybe if you get into like 12 inches thick, big brick..but even then I'm not sure. I think heat disapation is better because its lighter and fluffier, which is why its the only substrate we compact too.. Grain does generate some heat too, but its better then poo to, it would probably take over 15 pounds of grain per bag to raise the temp to much..even grain and straw the mycelium will raise the temps slightly, so with 5-10 pound bags of grain, you'd want them more like 80-83, instead of 84-86.

im using pasteurized horse manure compost.

i may have spawned a too much WBS to it, causing it to colonize/metabolize quicker, making it that hot.

i put it in a colder room in the house, and turned on the ceiling fan, and put a smaller fan next to it, that is blowing cool air on it..

its at about 85 degrees now, MUCH BETTER
