Using a .5 - 1% bleach solution to sterilize substrate?
    #1372726 -

This was originally posted on the advanced cult board, but I deleted that copy to effectively move it here. I wasn't getting any resposes over there.

Could one use a .5 - 1% bleach solution to chemically sterilize a dry substrate, such as dried manure? One could spray the container and dry substrate with the solution and let it sit for a day or two, or even heat it to speed up the process. After this, one could spray distilled water on the substrate until it is wet, drain it off, and introduce spawn. I doubt there would be enough bleach left to seriously disrupt colonization, especially if you first soak your cakes in sterile water before introducing the mycelium to the substrate. This will subject the mycelia to a smaller influx of bleach in solution upon introduction.

My friend wants to try it, but doesn't want to waste his time if someone here sees a major flaw he does not!

If this works, I can already see it being used in bulk teks, were sterilization becomes increasingly difficult.

i dont know wether it would work, but i would be concerned about the mushies possibly becoming a residual bleach trash dump for the mycellium and possible effects of bleach on alkaloids/structure... i would just stick with heat sterilization, if the bleach method worked i think someone would have mentioned it in print.

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

Yo this thread is 16 years old. The people you are reaponding too are long gone, non have posted in 5+ years.

Learn to read the post dates. Also misting with 150 ppm bleach solution is standard practice for agaricus growers.
