pre-sterilized substrates
    #960308 -

I recently won some cubensis spore syringes. The problem is that I really don't have the space to sterilize a substrate, or the matrials needed.

Does anyone know of a good myco store that sells pre-sterlized substrates that arent too expensive?

Thanks!!!

Do you really have that little space? All you need is pretty much one burner on a stove and a little bit of counter space. I'd say do it youself!

well i would try using a normal stove/pot to sterilize but ive read so many times that its really just best to finda preassure cooker. is it really just as good to use a stove?

and yea i saw the mycomania site, those bags look pretty cool. kind of expensive tho at 17.00.. i wonder if there are any alternatives

** oo yea what the hell are philosopher stones, i saw the pics.. what type of mushroom are they? look crazy!

thanks!

Philosopher Stones are sclerotia;it is a type of mushroom grown either by these two strains on sterilized rye grass seed - Ps. mexicana strain a or ps. tamp.
This is what they look like:

Of course thats HUGE for a stone!
Any other questions read the FAQ or do a search.
I plan on doing my stones this winter.

So, millet can produce sclerotia as well?..  Its not just  Rye grass seed?.. ((assuming you innoculated with  mex a, or p. tamps.))

a newbie I know tried pre-sterilized jars of substrate the first time and wouldn't recommend them because of cost and their apparent tendency to get compacted during shipping. of 12 pre-sterilized jars brown rice and vermiculite jars, at least 3 failed from contamination and 3 never fully colonized. when newbie broke apart a cake that wasn't fully colonized it was found that the middle was like dough, probably too wet and compressed for happy mycellium. newbie's theory is that the substrate in the jars can become too compressed while travelling in the mail. the bags apparently aren't as bothered by travel. plus if you think $17 is too much for bags, you may not want to pay the $2+ per jar. 12 jars was over $30.

I would go with Sporeworks Myco-environment bags. They are not too expensive and yield about a half ounce each.

Happygrins, Millet is a user here. I borrowed his pics. I am not quite sure if you can use millet, the grain, but I really do think that it is worth a try! Sorry for the confusion.
