Store bought compost?
    #1383317 - 03/17/03 09:45 AM (14 years, 12 days ago)

Can someone reccomend a good store bought manure, or compost, to use, that works good? Also, will I have to pasteurize it? Is there any advantage to adding straw to a compost substrate? Thanks.

scotts three in one is ok stuff you can find it at lowes . straw is good it will hold some water and add some more nutrients . hope this helps you out . If I were you I would ask the local farmer if he had some horse or cow poo you can get for your garden .

Thanks guys, and poops, where would someone find soilmate cow manure? Would someone wet the compost to the same consistency they would wet a casing? Squeeze a few drops? Also, do you recomend pastuerizing a jiffy mix casing? Thanks again.

... if you have a choice, definitely go for the real shit as opposed to the store bought, tho scotts is okay... absolutely pasteurize it, otherwise you will get be greatly increasing yr contamination factor, among other problems... and add straw fer sure.....

Yup, mix cut straw ( 2 inches or less ) and composted cow poop ( baught at nursery supply store ) walmat won't carry it because they have food instore, but check the outdoor garden supplies once they open.

or .. check with your local nursery's. mix straw and poop 50/50, in a pillow case, submerge in water inside a big pot, use a candy therm and bring to 170 f , do not let the water boil, maintain these temps for aprox 1 hr.

pull out pillow case and squeeze as much water as you possibly can.

let it sit in a strainer overnight or until cool. add grain or PF cakes..... and bingo.

I use straight verm and a bit of peat moss, ( pc it to sterilize it ) to make a casing layer, mix the verm and soil in a bucket and moisten, do not over wet, you can always spray your casing later to add water.

that's pretty much it.

good luck.

ps: i like the composted cow manure simply because it's clean, don't smell, it's sifted and has no bugs/fungus/rocks......... and works VERY well. i assure you.

even if the pure shit is better, i still prefer the bagged stuff. 5 $ for a 40 lb bag.. it's cheap.
