Concepts such as the soul rose out of ignorance, just as we once attributed everything to a plethora of gods and spirits. Once science came along, all of these things went to hide in the darkness, except for the soul due to the human love of simple explanations, even if those explanations have no evidence or reasoning.

science is as baseless as philosphy.
its merely complicated observations.
science says, this is based on that, which is based on this, which, we dont yet understand.

anyone care to explain how/why hydrogen bonds our dna helixes together?
elmers glue?

exactly bleak, science explains things merely in terms of other things so we know if this then that but nothing more.

I think the creator used "crazy glue" to hold us together. Elmers is water soluable and made a mess of us every time we cried or took bath. :nut:

i agree that science is as baseless as philosophy or psychology
but a description does not need a base, it's a relation between a speaker and the world. it exists.
i'd say the point of science is pruning descriptions as much as you can with occam's razor and experiments. philosophy &psychology have their own ways of relating.
from a scientific viewpoint soul-separate-from-body is b.s. science is consistent with itself.
can one have other viewpoints? what do they do for you? are they imagination like unicorns or relationships with something outside yourself?

personally i find the idea that the soul IS the brain to be much more profound than saying the soul exists astrally. it doesn't mean your soul is not holy. it means your brain IS holy.

Swami, the car also needs a "driver". Thats the equivalent of the soul to the body. :rotfl:

Not true!

All a car needs is a heavy brick.

muh?

not quite?

philosophy says, I observe this, I think this, thus and this and so and and tada!

science says, Hey look, if I drop this heavy rock, it lands at the exact same time as this smaller rock, no really try it out for yourself.

I do think it's true that this happens, sort of. People may state that we don't know how the brain works but I don't think that's actually why they believe in the soul at all. If actual Artificial Intelligence were to be created, I know there would be people who would not chance their minds.

If you think that sounds like you, then would that machine have a soul?

... just some food for thought.

No need to wait for more advanced AI. The soul concept is yet another egocentric version of humans being the center of the universe. It is what gives us life, yet other animals are deemed to NOT have souls. Here is the standard inconsistency.

My doggie has 4 souls, I like to call them pads .

Some people believe everything has a soul, because they relate it to the fact that everything in the universe is made of the same material, and they believe that material is conscious.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
