Ninor contamination in spawn: Not a problem?
    #4227099 - 05/27/05 03:09 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys. My buddy just started doing mycology again after a little break, and he wants to do bulk. He decided that because he has never pasteurized straw before he would practice by pasteurizing it (using shroom gods straw tek, minus actually putting the spawn in) while he was waiting for his spawn to grow. His first tub had no signs of contamination at all for 5 days, after which you can't really see the contamination, but the straw smell is intermingled with a rye kind of mildewy smell. Not terribly strong but noticeable. Upon closer inspection he noticed he could just barely see what looked like the beginning stages of a wispy white contam but it was VERY small, mostly impossible to see with the naked eye and only localized to a very small part of the straw. My friend is thinking, if this was an actual spawn run by now the mycelium would have colonized probably 70-80% of the substrate and it wouldn't be a big problem because it would isolate the contam which didn't have enough time to get ahold. My question is, what do you guys think? if there is any contam at all within the first week is your spawn done for? Ny friend would like to get his process down so that he can have straw sit for a week without contaming before wasting 4 quarts of precious spawn on it.

Come on someone's got some ideas about minor contamination. As an update, today day 6 after pasteurization/putting in tub I took the straw out because it was starting to smell enough to be noticed. The cobweb looking contamination turned out to not be very wide spread at all, localized to a very sparsely colonized 4" square area on the bottom of the tub. Anyways, as always all your thoughts are appreciated.

That sounds like cob web. Likes humid places with bad gas exchange. Wet still air. Think about this. If it was microscopic yesterday, 4" square today, how big do you think it will be tomorrow? Probably covered. I went with h/poo as it is more contam resistant than straw. Is h/poo not an option for you? In the future, if you need to get rid of the cob web, you can try spraying with a 25%H2O2, 25%alcohol and 50% distilled water combo. Spray on the mold spots lightly. It will appear to melt and hopefully won't return.

Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony.

Cut out the contaminated part, spray around the edges with a water/h2o2 solution. I've done this with casings and had nothing but success. Good luck.

Why would he want to do that to unspawned straw. There is no mycelium to help stop its spread.
