 contamination problem

I have a grow kit that I purchased about 1 week ago. All was doing fine till today(6 days later). The kit is starting to pin and at the same time I am getting a small amount of green stuff on the side of the container. The kit says that I can try to cut it out. The problem I have with this is that you are leaving a bare spot for further contamination. Should I cover this bare spot with ver. or something else? why would it get contaminated? The one tech on this page has one growing the shrooms in a uncovered container, and I thought that once the mycillium is growing strong it wouldnt get contaminated. What gives? Any help appreciated

Mycellium growing in a sterile substrate can impeed to growth of competitors in 2 way. First, once the entrie substrate has been colonized the mycellium hold what is basically a monopoly on the available nutrients. Secondly the secretion of antibiotics by the mycellium. This means that once the mycelium has run through the substrate it would be difficult for a competitor to take hold so long as the mycelium stays healthy and strong. That doesn't mean it can't happen though.

This one is a toughy. If the substrate has not been run through very thuroughly then cutting out the contaminated spot will just be exposing more "up for grabs" substrate to any airborne contams in the room. But if you don't cut it out it may grow rather large, get a good foothold, and begin seriously competing with the mycelium for nutes.
Here is what I would do, and remember, this is just that and not a concrete answer. I also can't see your setup and don;t know how close the mycelium is to colonizing the rest of the substrate. If the mycellium is still establishing itself, and the contam begins growing though a large portion of the substrate, I'd cut it out, but you may want to look into using something to neutralize the growth before removing it for one reason. When you cut out the growth your agitating the surface and releasing any contam spores present across the rest of the sbstrate, if it is mostly colonized, you can hope and this may not be an issue, but if there is lots of uncolonized area you may just be multiplying your issue. If the mycelium just about has the substrate covered and the contam doesn't seem to be running out of control, I would let it be and hope that the mycellium over runs it. NOTE: I am much less worried about eating from a contaminated substrate than most growers here. Some would say that I am a fool. I would say I've eaten my fair share of moldy bread.

try removing if you want, and try regular (light) mistings of diulte H2O2/H2O solution (one part 3% H2O2 to ten parts sterile water) on the contamination site(s). it will probably come back though, and sometimes it likes to come back deep inside the substrate where you can't see it.if i where you i'd toss it and don't buy kits anymore. the problem is you have to ditch an attempt sometimes and it's cheaper to throw out a couple cakes or a casing along with some perlite (only a few dollars) than to throw out a grow kit (what ever price they could get you to pay). god luck.

Thanks for the reply. The mycullium seems to be covering the entire area. when I cut into it it seems to be all mushrooms(the mushroom like thingys that grow under the surface)theres a ton of them all throughout the substrate and you can see them all along the sides(sorry I'm new at this and am too lazy to go look up the correct term) Knowing what you just said I would have left it but its too late now. I wiped down the inside of the terriarium with lysol hoping that would help. Thanks again for the input!
