You're better off starting with a kit because it's a lot easier and you don't have to know much to fruit mushrooms from it.
You can find kits at www.fungiperfecti.com or search key word "mushroom kits."
Chantrelles(C. cibarus) and black trumpets (Craterellus cornucopioides) are both mycorrhizal mushrooms that grow symbiotically with trees. They're rather difficult to grow and procedures to cultivate these mushrooms have yet to be perfected.
You can get a kit of the common white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) from a lot of different sources.
From spores, growing mushrooms takes practice and you should start by trying to get established mycelium to fruit before you deal with spores.

all of the above, and you may consider trying a "trash" species like coprinus comatus, ( shaggy manes), as these are similar in their environmental needs to the prefered types grown by the majority of users of this board. this way, someone may be able to help you with problems that will arise as you learn all the details and hone your skills. they are "trash" mushrooms, only because they will grow on just about anything, and are very forgiving for the beggining cultivator. Last time i looked, fungi perfecti had a kit of those too. they are quite good eating
