Request for Panellus culture
    #2896881 - 07/16/04 12:09 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Hey everyone -

I have recently tried to replate a culture of Panellus stipticus from slants and have found that none of my cultures are viable. I am planning to use the organism as part of a reseacrch project on fungal bioluminescence.

Does anyone have a healthy culture of this that they can send to me?

Thanks in advance,
Armedia

Damn, that's funny Armedia.  I have just noticed that the culture you had sent me eons ago has given up the ghost as well.  Liquid cultures, slants, colonized wood, they all appear to have died :frown:
Out of curiousity, what is the project?

Huh. It was you I was thinking of contacting when I thought it was looking bad.

I do have a couple of oldish plates that are still luminescing, so I might be able to get some clean material off them.

The project is the early stages of a master's thesis, which may be on lumiescent fungi. I have a long way to go, but one idea I have is to fruit or just grow out the panellus on sawdust blocks and test to see if the glowing blocks attract fungus gnats in a natural setting. I haven't figured out quite how to collect the flies, but I thought yellow sticky traps might work.

I have a paper (i'll post a ref when I can dig it up) that suggests that fungus gnats would aid in spore dispersal, but as far as I know, this has not been verified experimentally.

http://www.luxgene.com/

This species interests me also as a curiosity.
Is anybody able to donate/trade a wedge? Thanks!

While we're all friendly asking, I'd be interested as well   Have edibles to trade.

I've heard it is not a strong light and takes about 5 minutes of darkness for your eyes to adjust and see it but cool nonetheless .. research..

Hi armedia

Unfortunately I don't have the culture your seeking but I do have Omphalotus olearius, formerly known as either Omphalotus illudens or Clitocybe illudens which is bioluminescencent.

Well, actually, I'm interested in all bioluminescent fungi, and Omphalotus has been on my list for awhile. How does it do in culture? Does the mycelium glow?

I'd be very interested in a culture of this, if you would be willing.

To be honest I don't know. I've had a print for the longest time but haven't got round to plates etc due to sheer laziness.

The species is quite easy to cultivate though, I've seen numerous successful grows using pasteurized straw casings.

I only have a quarter of a print spare.. more than enough to start a culture. It's yours if you want it.

It seems that they sell same cultures as The Spore Works,
only the prices are a bit higher...
