contamination????
    #4157984 - 05/10/05 02:49 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

i heard that the parts of the cakes that you touch will produce parts on the mushrooms that are blue.... however, how do you tell the difference in a part of the cake that will turn blue and a contaminated cake???? is there a difference in the color????

The bluing of mycelium is unorganized, and is somewhat easily detected after you have seen it before.. most mold that is blue will be almost a perfect circle and it will spread quickly, some people try to save these cakes by cutting off the contaminated spots, but best thing to do would be to throw it out... But be sure its contamination and not bluing.. Plus i don't think this is the right forum to be in try the contamination forum..

When testing for a contamination, it is recommended that you swap the "blue" area, if the blue comes off its a contam, if not it's just bruising.

'swab' with hydrogen pyroxide. also in about 2 days u would know if its a contam. bruising goes away over time, contam spreads.

The blue is very different. It doesnt look like a growth, mold does. Molds arent very blue either. There is a blue/green mold that can look bluish, and bruising can look greenish. If its mold though, it will come off onto a cuetip when lightly swabbed. It will also grow very quickly. It will also look like a growth on the substrate, instead of a tint to mycelium. Also contams dont usually start on mycelium, they start on unclonized things, and spread from there. If you notice the discoloration where yesterday you saw white, its quite likly bruising. Of course green molds do have white mycelium too...but after youve seen it a few times you can recognize it. Its thicker solid fluffy white. It turns green very quickly though. Once you do get some contams...you'll know.

Contams:

I have no good bruising pictures...but you can see the green growing look of the green.

If the cake is bruised from handling or because it's dry, it's BLUE. No mistaking it. Trich at it's later, spore producing stages is green or a bit greenish, grey. No mistaking it either. A dry cake can be dunked for 12 hours and then cased again. The blue will whiten back up eventually. Take Scat's advice with the q-tip swab. If it transfers to the swab, it's trich. A bruise will not transfer to a swab.
