Hummingbirds

Here is a picture with three Calliope hummingbirds which are the smallest in North America at 3".

These are two males in flight and one female sitting and poking her head around.

They are aggressive for being so small and chase the other larger hummingbirds away. They make a loud noise at times that sounds just like a droning plane coming in low. The first time one did it while flying about 3 feet over my head it just about dropped me to my knees.

I find watching them and being around them to be a spiritual thing. They are so fast and active and amazing fliers it kind of puts you in a trance watching them especially up close with a lot around.

My English girlfriend has some (how should I put it) amazing, er- spiritual abilities; which is why I have nicknamed her: "Hummingbird".

Maybe she would have lived longer with a better diet.

I've heard that hummingbirds are the most agressive of all the birds. Sometimes killing each other. Yet you get a spiritual experience from watching them. That is why I believe all is one! :mushroom2:

"hummingbirds are the most agressive of all birds. Sometimes killing each other. Yet you get a spiritual experience from watching them"

My spiritual experience with them doesn't relate to their aggression other than the utter awe at watching them charge at each other and NOT hit the other bird. Because they are so territorial and aggressive, and there are so many in such tight quarters, it can be a real dance and a fast one at that. Occasionally you can hear their wings hitting things, but I haven't seen one grounded yet.

The are also so beautiful particularly in the sun, that it's hard not to feel uplifted watching them.

Yeah, I heard what you said the first time, I just thought it was interesting that depending on what you put your attention on, your experience of that thing could be very different from someone elses.

That in my werd logic, is evidence of the oneness of everything.  :mushroom2:

We could also further divide, categorize, destroy things through the cancellations of effects and phsycis to fit the view that everything is itself; and at war with everything...

General notions don't mean much IMO.

I have to play devil's advocate on this one.

We had several hummingbird feeders in my backyard when I was a child. Yeah those little babies were aggressive and man could they zoooom around fast! Of course they could- they were all hopped up on sugar water!

Sometimes I would stand near the feeder motionless and one would come buzzing by. A couple of times one flew right up to my face and hovered inches from me, gazing at me intently. I thought it was pretty cool until I realized that having an incredibly quick bird with a needle shaped beak mistaking my eyeballs for flowers might not be such a good thing.

Yea they have gotten about 8 inches from my face and if I didn't wear glasses I would be more concerned about that needle pointed beak.

The other day one flew so close to the back of my head I could feel the breeze from it's wings beating.

I had their sugar water mixture on high test one day and they became literally like kids on too much sugar. I took down the feeder and added more water to the mix.
