POLYESTER CASING COVER
    #4098770 - 04/26/05 12:15 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Above is a picture of Dupont polyester spunbonded landscape fabric (Lowes, HomeDepot, gardren supply stores, et al 3X50 ft roll @ $10).

It is the same thing as POLYFIL, except in a cloth like form.
It can be pasturized, or sterilized.
If layed over a colonized bulk substrate, myc will grow right through it.

If casing cover material (40% ph adjusted peat / 40% verm / 20% coir) is applied over the top of it, myc will grow through both.

The advantage in doing so is that the poly cloth cover will hold the substrate intact & when harvesting you cannot pull up DIVOTS of substrate. Then, simply patch the bald spot in the casing cover.

On the adgenda now is a high temp open cell foam artifical casing cover material that myc will grow right through, form primordia on & fruit off of.

You simply add the foam blanket over a colonized substrate, continue to incubated until myc appears on the surface, expose the tray to fresh air exchange & light 12/12 in the primordia forming stage, 8/16 in the fruiting stage.

The foam blanket is as moisture absorbent as a sponge, will serve as a protective casing cover & moisture resoirvor suppling the substrate below.

Have you had any success fruiting off of this foam blanket stuff?

Sounds very interesting.

I've been using that landscape cloth alot lately, keeping out gnats and messing around with it to protect the substrate under the casing as you stated.

Definitely want to hear more about the foam stuff

very impressive.
as i have no idea the consistency of this foam, i may be going in the wrong direction with this, but...
this foam obviously can and needs to be pasteurized; or since it's synthetic, maybe just sterilized, but would it be feasible to pressurize it in a can for transportation afterwards?

Simply sterilize inside an autoclave bag & impulse seal the bag - when removed from the PC. Hell, you can boil it in an autoclave bag, for that matter.

how was your pinset with the foam? What do you do if you get uneven myc growth (patching wise). And how bout a link?

Is the cloth soaked prior to sterilization or does the cloth pull the moisture from the substrate? If neither, does misting keep the moisture levels up alone?

This has worked really well for me, after you suggested it to me a while back agar.

Sometimes it's kinda a hassle to mess with and PC, etc., so I leave it off, but it works just like you say.  Makes patching a torn up casing a breeze and I imagine it improves yields, but I don't have enough experience to say myself.

Thanks again agar for your innovative ideas.

Is the alternative casing foam stuff readily available?

Edit:: Like from a store, etc...

If the cloth is not sterilized and is placed between substrate and casing layer in outdoor patches do you think it will contam?

Probably not, cause it doesn't have any nutrients.

Excellent. Would putting this help keep out the critters from the patch and help with harvesting?

It shouldn't hurt

Don't know how well it will help outdoors, though. I'll have to try it.

Why didn't you reply to my PM?

It's been a month, are you going to send my prize?

edit: removed the word 'ever' so it won't sound snotty.

Dont jump the gun, people get more busy then they planned sometimes, when you have a few to many casings to harvest. Plus its comming up time to release his new substrate.. Give him some time, he'll come through I'm sure.

Well the ever part was probably the only reason I said anything. Agar is good for his word, even if it takes him some time...it usually doesnt...I am awaiting somethin from him myself though, and I know hes just been busy.

Sorry if I sounded like an asshole or anything

No, it's cool.
I'm more upset at being ignored, especially since my PM to him was polite and simple.

too many...if he is getting anywhere as many as I get.

and I'm sure he does.

I'm sure he will read your post and get back to you.
sorta hard to ignore this post of yours.

can we get back on topic now?

thank you!~
