Casing with vermiculite

I am thinking about my first casing experiement to be just a simple vermiculite layer. How many of you have gotten good results with breaking up the substrate and putting a casing layer of vermiculite on top?

It works ok, but the main purpose of a casing layer is to retain moisture and keep out grems. So Try this. Take some vermiculite and soak it real good. Then squeeze out all the water until it only trickles. Then bake this in the oven for 1 hour in a pan with a tight aluminum foil covering. Let it cool, then add it over the top of your broken up substrate( by-the-way), let your substrate grow back together for a few days before adding a casing for optimum results, cover your substrate with an inch of this pasturized damp verm. Then put about 1/2 inch of dry verm on top of this. Then you should be fine. One thing with verm though unlike peat moss, verm tends to harden and make a shell if you spray it with water to much and then would need deep scratching. So if you use just verm dont spray your casing directly use perlite as an alternative to humidity and moisture for your casing.:)bluhoney
