My current setup and question on pinning. (pics)
    #4094695 - 04/25/05 12:11 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Well I'm currently on day 14 in my fruiting chamber with crumbled B+ BRF cakes, cased in 50/50+ mix. I've had my battles with slow pinning and seem to have overcome some of them. I noticed recently that the casing closest to the window has pinned a lot more than the other casings.

I switched the front casing by the window with the casing furthest from the window and noticed a change in the number of pins. My pins went from 2-3 to now 19 in casing number 1. I don't know why this is happening, I just know it's happening.

As you can see from my setup and the amount of days in the fruiting chamber, I should probably be further along than I am. I don't know why the pins are taking so long, or are they? It seems like everyday a new pin rears it's head.

I am currently giving 12+ hours of indirect sunlight, fanning 3-5 times a day with a small house fan, not misting because excess humidity seemed to be causing some overlay, and currently switching the tubs around every few days since 04/22.

I am wondering why the tub that is closest to the window pins more than the others. Could it be the light source or it's relation to the heater. The heater is directly between casing number 1 and 2, but not directly underneath either one. The thermometer is located at the rear of the tub to show a consistent temp, but may be higher near the heater. The temp is a constant 74 degrees.

Should I raise the temp slightly to speed up the fruiting phase?

As you can see in casing #2, I have a fairly advanced fruit in there, compared to the others. Almost all of my pins that have started are continuing to grow, so I don't see any aborts on the surface.

If there are any questions or suggestions about what I'm doing, please feel free to give your input. Here are the photos. Pay particular attention to the amount of pins labeled for each photo and remember that casing's 1 & 3 were switched on Friday, which resulted in casing #1 (which used to be #3) having more pins.

I hope this post isn't too confusing.

I believe a few degrees of warmness speeds things up. Optimal temps are 74-77...but at 77 things will move a little quicker. There wont be more pins because of the heat though. A little more light intensity will however give you a heavier pinset. Make sure its not in direct sunlight though.

All in all though, they really dont look like much of a problem. It looks like it was probably just exposed to pinning triggers unevenly...some light got to those spots where you see the pins to much and they started forming priomordia a little sooner...this can screw up your whole flush because pinset could be a little light. Usually fewer pins, will concentrate all the energy into making big shrooms.

I dont know that I'd change much....

Also, it doesnt seem you have air exchange going into each tub? If your just doing manual fanning, that can dwindle your numbers and take alot more time too..

Thanks Scatmanrav. I am currently using a small house fan for air exchange. Should I increase the amount of fanning? What If I left my casing lids cracked and put a fan in a position to blow air over the opened containers? Would that dry my casing out too excessively?

I do apologize for the multitude of questions.

It probably would, unless you placed it on a timer...which could work if you only cracked it a very small amount and only did the fan like 30 minutes every 2 hours or something...and you kept up with misting enough. A cool mist hose split into three would also work. A fish pump with just a hose going in the top of each container would work too probably, though it would also need to be on a timer to prevent drying out. Definatly always fan as much as possible though without drying out your casings, if you can increase fanning manually or automatically, its good.

I thought I was only supposed to be misting up to the pinning stage. I haven't misted for about 3 days or so. I stopped the misting to stop the vegetative growth of the mycelium.

Should I resume lite misting after every fan?

Well if you have a fan blowing constantly you'll need to mist. With manual fanning, misting bulk generally isnt needed. If you throw a fan on there though, misting would need to happen most likly.

Misting shouldnt be limited to any one cycle, it should just be done only when it needs to be done..if the casing is drying out. If you can tell the casing layer is still very moist, then dont mist.

That post isnt usfull or helpful. Why tell someone there casing layer is obviously to colonized? Iniation was probably fine since its been fruiting to long. Its pinning now so its not advised to do anything, so why say anything?

Not that he's gonna have much of any problem with his "stroma" leading to overlay since the primorida and pinning is already happening and the flush will be over soon enough, then allowing for him to patch it up.

Pointing out obvious flaws that have nothing to do with the topic isnt helpful.

Thanks Scatmanrav. I did ask for opinions though. I do see the point of your response. Overlay is obviously present and doesn't need to be pointed out again.

This is my first casing and a great learning experience. My subsequent casings will be much better as I learn my own niche.
