Growth from the bottom question (with pics)

So 1 full week after birthing my friend see's his very first mushroom! Oh happy day! He just wants to make sure he's doing this right, he could use an experienced opinion. Cakes were birthed "upside down", with the top of the jar (dry vermiculite) now as the bottom of the cake. This seems to be where the pins are happening, and where this first one is growing from. He's got 4 cakes and after checking the bottom has noticed several pins forming on the underside of the cake. Is this "right" or ok? It seems to be working, so he tends to go with "if it ain't broke", but he just wanted to double check. Thanks.
