newbie questions (about to make my first attempt at growing)

I want to use a casing method right away.. but i'm a bit confused..

so basicly.. you got your colonized cakes.. and you put those in a "container" (casing) which has some wet vermiculite in it.. (the container is placed in a place which is kept humid)

so.. does the case need to be in darkness ? (the cakes need to colonize in darkness, right ? cuz otherwise they'll start fruiting, right ?)

ok ... so if the case is in darkness.. the cakes will make the vermiculite in the case colonize with them ? ...
or is the casing just some kind of container to allow the cakes to fruit better, or something ?

so what my newbie knowledge says to me now is

"make cakes, .. make container with wet vermiculite, place container in closet with perlite, .. then put colonized cakes in the container and wait for the vermiculite in the container to colonize.. and only then allow light to shine on it so it will start to fruit"

correct me if i'm wrong ! i will appreciate it

DUNK THE CAKES.

Then.. Cut the cakes in halves, or chunks as some people do. Put them in the container. Put DAMP, not wet, verm over the top until you can't see them anymore, about 1/4" deep. tape a bag or plastic or cling film over the top of the container (or put the lid on if it has one). Then incubate, dark, 86 degrees F, couple days.

hmm
So basicly.. casing is putting the cakes in a container and then applying a new layer of substrate to colonize.. I think i understand now

does there have to be layer underneath the cakes ? plain vermiculite maybe ?
then where does the perlite go ?
