newbie questions SPECIFIC
    #433048 - 10/22/01 05:56 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

ive talked to many on this forum, but ive had some conflicting opinions on the following:
what is better using an oven or glove box for innoculation?
is it worth using an additional botton layer of verm in jars?
when using micron filters does one need perlite or does the top layer or verm prevent much water loss?
does one need an incubator or is putting the jars in a bag that contains their generated heat good enough?
is rye grain flour only better than brown rice when going for mass growing?
is casing only effective for rye and not brown rice?
thanks so much. peace

1) either - just be careful, slow and keep exposure to a minimum
2) no idea
3) depends on how warm without the incubator?
4) once again stoopid me have no idea which better grain
5) casing effective with anything

hope i helped, or hope you wasted some quality time reading it

what is better using an oven or glove box for innoculation?
________________________________________________
-Glove box is more protected and sterile(assuming you dont have any contams in there to begin with) but oven has always worked well for me.

is it worth using an additional botton layer of verm in jars?
_______________________________________________
-You don't need it on the bottom(helps with moisture, but not essential) You don't even need it on the top if you're using filter disks. Just make sure the the hole in the lid is no more than 2" diameter if you live in a dry climate.

when using micron filters does one need perlite or does the
top layer or verm prevent much water loss?
________________________________________________
-**See above

does one need an incubator or is putting the jars in a bag that contains their generated heat good enough?
_________________________________________________
-depends on ambient temeratures. I put them in a Rubbermaid tub wraped in a blanket, and if it cools down more than 10? below incubating temperature, I turn a heating pad on low for a little bit. (You can get a decent thermometer at Wal-Mart for pretty cheap.)

________________________________________________
is rye grain flour only better than brown rice when going for mass growing?
________________________________________________
-Both work well. Everyone has their own opinion, but I've used both with success. Now I even use a combination of the two with some vermiculite. I just like to experiment though.

is casing only effective for rye and not brown rice?
__________________________________________
-Casing works for both substrates.

Hope this was helpful. Thanks for being specific with your questions.
