Tennessee Stud users, got a question for yah

I have 4 quarts of WBS colonizing right now. Although one jar isn't showing any growth yet (5 days after innoc.). Anyways, my question is this. What is the approximate volume of a 10# bag of prepastuerized 50/50 poo/straw from Tenn. Stud? I wanna spawn my WBS to this but I need to know what size casing containers I will need. If I spawn say 2-3 quarts (I'm counting on at least one jar failing) will a 10# bag be enough for 2-3q? If I want to have a 3-4" substrate layer in my casing then what dimensions for a casing container would you folks recommend? My fruiting chamber is approx. 27"L x 15.5"W x 18"Depth. Thanks for any advice

Not sure if 3 quarts of WBS will be enough for 10 lbs. of Tenn. Stud Poo. I just did some yesterday and used about 3 quarts WBS per 4 lbs. poo. Poo was of excellent quality. Can't wait to see what happens. Good Luck. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

yeah i used like 2.5 quarts for about 4 or 5 lbs of poo/straw... just get the first one spawned and make up some more wbs jars in the process... the wait time between the 2 should make for a well cycled garden, GL

Thanks folks. That helps give me an idea of the volume of the poo/straw. I guess I'll spawn it to about 5 lbs. of the Tenn. Stud, and maybe split that into 2 casing containers, unless I find something that'll work well for the whole mass. Guess I better get some more WBS jars sterilized. Maybe I'll try a G2G transfer from one of the jars colonizing now. Thanks for the help guys, first grow here and I'm swingin for the fences.

yeah do try a g2g, even if you don't ever use the process at least you've done it and have the experience
just make sure you get something in that shit to give it some aeration (coir, verm, straw)

Hey, this 16 quart sweater box will give you a 3"-4" substrate depth with 5 lbs. poo and three quarts WBS.
Good Luck. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

I use 2 quarts of WBS to 5 LBS. poo, with full colonization in about 5 days. Maybe this will help you figure out your ratio.

coir or verm in the WBS jar? For aeration? Sorry misunderstanding your response I think. Were you talking about the G2G or the casing?

Hey Diver, do you put a thin layer of colonized WBS on top after mixing up spawn? For a contam barrier. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

Hey HippieChick,
Nope, sure don't. I just mix evenly as possible and go. This whole thing about "contams landing on your bulk surface, oh no!" is a bit overdone IMO. When you consider the uber fast colonization times of poo, and how resistant it is to contams, it's not worth the effort to put a top layer of spawn down.
Just my .02!

Thanks. I did on 2 and didn't on 2. That's why I used 3 quarts WBS on one. Really would of liked to use the extra quart just to spawn, but I've heard a bunch of different views on this subject. Geuss I'll find out on my own now. See what happens. I kinda like your old Avi. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

That's cool. I think you'll find that they'll all work out fine.

it's kind of funny how you asked this question, but you suggested it to me in another thread quite adamantly.

Maybe she changed her stance on it, or wasn't sure about the practice. It happens, many techniques in this hobby become established as "the norm", and at some point you start to question what's what.

just to let you in on some experience..
I spawed 2 pints yes (pints)of WBS to 5lbs 50/50 poo/straw prepasturized. It was fully conlonized in 5 days. No top layer of spawn for mine. Thecore temp stayd at 84 degrees without any external heating the RT was 72.
The myc loves that tenessee shit. I cant say enough good things about this shit.

I did it on 2 of my 4. Mike who owns Tenn. Stud himself recommends it. As, I believe, so does Agar. Since then I have heard a lot of poo users say they don't. Better safe then sorry, especially on a first attempt. Good Luck. I asked Diver if he did so I could get his input. Trying to figure out what works for some of the more experienced growers. I'm glad to see you got your order! As far as the top layer is concerned, I recommend it as a fail-safe procedure, especially to those who are just beginning to experiment with the wonderful world of Bulk Substrates. As you say--Better safe than sorry. My substrate does colonize VERY quickly and the top layer is not a requirement--only a safe-guard.
