i'm a newbie here, sorry.... there is absolutely NOWHERE around me that has canning jars. I've been to or called every major department store, hardware store, and housewares store in a 20 mile radius, as well as called numerous gift shops and specialty cooking stores.
so i'm thinking about trying to start with just 10 oz drinking glasses covered with a double layer of tin foil held on with rubber bands. i'm going to be using the PF/MMGG tek with perlite in the terrarium, substituting the glasses for the canning jars. anybody think this could work? i think it says on PF that this might work, but contamination could be a problem. i've got puerto rican spore syringes, which I've heard are pretty hardy, so might i be okay?

I live in east bumfuck Maine, jars are the easiest thing to find.

It works. Exactly as you described it. WIthout the rubber bands though. I do(did) it this way.

Yeap, i've also done that, it works. It looked exactly like the one Anno is holding, it's easier for the mycelium to breed this way, watch out for contams (specially cobweb) at the top.

Have you checked grocery stores and closeout stores ( Big Lots, Odd Lots...) Those are the only 2 types of stores that carry them around here. They are about 8$ / dozen at the grocery stores , and 3$ a dozen at the closeouts.

thanks for the help/assurance guys. i'm gonna get going tomorrow. i'm psyched!!! any suggestions for inoculation with the foil. should i put on a foil layer and pretend it's a jar cap: i.e. poke four holes in it before sterilization, cover with more foil while boiling, then quickly remove top-most foil, inoculate, and then replace top foil layer? should i sterilize with no holes in the foil then just poke holes with the spore syringe?
any other suggestions for a first time grower using the PF/MMGG tek? do i really need to lysol the entire room?
i live in cali... i don't know why i can't find jars. no one had any ideas for me except "have you tried walmart or target yet?" even at the specialty kitchen stores.

I would rubberband 1 tinfoil or 2 aroudn the jar and poke the holes then use another on top then sterilize. And yes you should use lysol liberally. I turn off the AC and all the fans and let the air settle for about 20 minutes then drench the room in lysol till I can barely breathe, then commence operation.

Me....I would wrap a filter around the top like micron magick and put a rubber band on it and THEN top it with foil.
