Canning Jars
    #761365 - 07/20/02 07:08 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone know where I can get some cheap (or at all) in the UK, or in europe if shipping is cheap.

I've been searching for ages, and however nice the expensive jam at sainsbury's is, I can't afford to buy more than a few, or eat that much jam.

The only place I found in the US that ships to the UK charges $100 for shipping.

I'm not too desperate, and can go on eating jam if I need to, but if anyone knows of somewhere in the UK or europe with cheap shipping, please please plkease let me know.

Not much help, as I have no idea where you can find Kerr, Ball or Mason canning jars in the UK. I would guess you want to do PF style cakes?

From the Raccoons experiance any wide mouth glass jar -- with metal lid will work, so long as the sides are tapered up wider towards the top or worst case straight.

Even a water glass or beer mug will suffice. Just use a filter disc & double or triple tin foil held tight with sturdy rubber bands.

There has to be shops that sell new jars somewhere in the UK. Worst case check thrift stores, second hand shops or the like.

You can also just use rye grain or wild bird seed in any type jar to spawn for straw/dung or straight dung substrates. After it is 100% colonized, you spoon it out anyway. So, the neck size of the jar is no big deal.

Simply soak grain or bird seed over night, rinse well, drain well, fill jars w/internal filter disc 3/4 full of the seed or grain, PC 60 to 90 minutes @ 15 pounds, allow to cool somewhat in the PC, remove while still warm, shake to insure no clumps.

Allow to cool to room temp & inject spores. Store around 85F in the dark, shake again when 10 to 20% colonized. When 100% colonized -- spawn a pasturized substrate with the stuff.

If you want a lot of spawn after you have a few going. Simply prep more new grain/seed & jars & under sterile conditions transfer 2 tablespoons of colonized grain/seed to new jars. One colonized quart jar will get you 20 -- 30 more with grain to grain transfer & they colonize quickly.

If you can find medical grade face masks & a shower cap to wear over your hair while doing transfers & have fairly sterile conditions to make the transfers in, it is easy as pie. At least for some.

Good luck. SixTango

Yeah, I know about all the different containers that can be used, what do you think I've been doing for months I've had rectangular cakes and everything.

I've found a very nice jar, which the expensive jam at sainsbury's comes in, but I don't really like jam. I bought 4 a month ago, and have only got through one. I don't really want to waste the jam by throwing it out, and I don't want to eat 12+ jars of jam, so I need a cheap alternative, sometime. For the moment I'll just stick to the few odd shapes I've got.

Oh, and I'm trying millet when it gets here on tuesday, so I can use some odd shape jars.

Actually, those jam jars work out cheaper than canning jars.
I found a hardware shop that could get all sorts of mason jars, so I inquired.
1/2 pint mason jars 'tapered' were ?2.30 each!
Jam jars.... ?1.40? Bit bigger too
Of course the best thing to do is use any jar, with tyvek filter and millet seed, easily got from pet shops. Quicker, cheaper and easier.

Good luck

Looks like I better start eating jam I found a place that did plastic equivalents but they work out about ?3 each. Jam is looking tastier by the minute, I suppose I could make jam cakes, or even sell them......
