Quick question about quart/pint jars
    #398228 - 09/19/01 01:42 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

HI..
I just got a pressure cooker.. and I forgot to make sure its big enough..
its 8 inches in diamater, and 4 1/2 inches deep..
I dont have anything but 250 ML jars that fit..
But I was just wondering if quart or pint jars will fit in.
And if quart, or pint jars are best to grow rye.. or if oven bags are better.
Thanks.

Yes, when purchased new they generally come with a little rack for that very purpose.

ok, because I have a rack, but then i dont think the jars would fit.. a cloth would be much thinner.

No one is answerign my question as to wether oven/autoclave bags are better than pint jars, or the large jars... I heard that the oven bags contaminate all the time..

Any size jars are fine as long as they fit into your cooker. Wide mouth is not a necessity as long as the opening is slightly larger than the bottom, or you may have a hard time getting your cakes out of the jar. As for the bags, they are mostly used for bulk substrate growing and I dont see why they would contaminate any easier than jars.

My jar tops curve inwards..
but with Rye, aren;t they loose pieces.. so they will just fall out?
I hope I got the right stuff. they look like rice grains except they are a little thicker right? or like sunflower seeds but a little thinner..

Using rye if its not possible to slide out, just use a sterilized fork or spoon and rake it out of the jar directly into your casing container.
