Sounds good except I think you're upposed to place your spawned substrate in the incubator, uncased for 7-10 days until it completely colonizes and then case and fruitGood LuckPeace Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

Also, I think you should layer the top of your poo with some colonized birdseed to act as a contam barrier. Should have read a little more. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

I think plastic wrap or a lid would be a better idea...

tennessee stud is reccomended by a few people on the board.
flaming people because they pay for stuff instead of going and getting it is kind of dumb. it's like telling someone they're stupid for eating at a restaraunt when they can cook food themselves... you pay for the convenience.
oh, wait until the myc is barely showing. you don't want it to colonize the top, just in the valleys of your casing layer... (ridges and valleys ,just like hyphae taught me. )

You top coat the substrate with a little extra spawn, so it will colonize quicker.
You cover that with cling wrap (not touching the substrate) & poke or slit pins holes in it (gas exchange), then cover that with crinkly aluminum foil, which still allows gas exchange, but keeps all light - out.

What broke redneck would actully want to clean a stable, Leach the poo, chop the straw, get the water right, and the pasturize when you can just spend 20bucks and get it sent to your door ready to use?
I do understand the satisfaction of doing it yourself if you have the resources(horse) close and you need alot, but for some of us the country is an good hour away. Also some of us think our time is worth more than our money.
sorry for the rant but theres a big diffrence in cityboy vs countryboy i guess.

I would, except I'm not a broke redneck. Don't confuse poor fools with frugal folks that like to work with their hands. There is a difference, I for one would rather go work in the stable for an evening and come back with this to play with for a couple months:

Think of the top layer of colonized birdseed as the dry vermiculite layer on a cake. It's there to help keep contam's from reaching the nutrient rich substrate underneath. Would you want your uncolonized BRF in the incubator with only plastic wrap with holes poked in it as your only barrier to contams. It says this right in the instructions for Tenn. Stud. I think whoever responded to you, thought you meant use the top layer as your ONLY contam barrier.
I agree that the colonized spawn layer on top helps...but foil or plastic wrap is still needed. I dont think you meant to disclude the foil/wrap, but I'm just sayin

Hey Scat, Yeah, I think that's what they thought. Colonized WBS instead of plastic and foil, instead of with. Everybodies like, where did you hear about this, where's the link? Like I thought of some great new thing or idea. Come on people, everybody seems to be going crazy over this Tenn. Stud substrate, which seems to be a great product for people without access to fresh poo, even want to try it myself, but let's read the information Mike has for it. Using the colonized spawn as a contam barrier is right there on the instruction page on his homepage. Take advantage of the information and Good Luck. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

Top notch advice that agar gives as well IMO, definatly helps with every part of the process, a little spawn layer on top. I definatly recoomend it as well. I'm sure the TN Stud product is just fine. It is horse poop afterall. I havnt heard of "bad" horse poop yet

As for mycelium poking through the top, this could very well happen before your poo is 100% colonized. May just be some spawn on top of the poo working it's way up before 100% colonization. Your whole timing of pinning may be messed up. You're right though, only time will tell. You might get a small flush, but not like if you had let the poo colonize and then case. Good Luck. Actually, vermiculite will prevent contam's. Coir does have a small amount of nutrious value. Ride it out. See what some of the other people suggest. Remember, what doesn't kill us, makes us better growers. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

hippie is pretty much right on point here. You will get shrooms and might have a little better chance of not getting contams.
But your yield will suffer. It just wont be an awesome fruiting.
But any fruiting is awesome really
