Top Five Bands

1 - The Beatles

42.2m dec 2001
42.6m mar 2002
44.2m end 2002
47.2m end 2003
49.7m jun 2004

Though SS didn't start until 20 years after their break-up, they are easily the top band and just continue to sell. Estimated total April 2005 is 52m.

2 - Metallica

33.2m feb 1999
40.21m mar 2002
44.4m jan 2004

They slowed a little in 2004 with no new release, giving a current estimate of 47m. Way ahead of any other rock band.

3 - Pink Floyd

26.6m dec 2001

A long way back in third place, their catalogue sells consistently - just like Metallica - and current estimate is 32.6m.

4 - U2

No definite figures available, but possible to estimate at least 30m from data on a lot of their albums. Likely to overtake Pink Floyd as that band is inactive.

5 - Pearl Jam

Again no definite figures, but estimate is 29.8m.
