i should have said "modern super-rock bands" since i already said zeppelin would be cool.
i'll give any music a chance.. have listened to at least a portion of every Tool album... i'm just left going, "ok, where's this amazing band?" the show at 'roo was just that.. a mash-up of noise... couldn't understand a word sung, a chord played, a drum beat hit.. it was like if you take a synth, and put the filter on "noise"

I hope metallica shows up for Roo... then I will sell eggs and tomatoes inside the gate for all the hippies to buy and throw at them.
Look, I like the Zep just as much as your next guy, but Roo needs to stop letting these has beens headline. It has always been a let down. Do you think Led Zeppelin will really be a good show? sure, I would go just to say I got to see them.... but it will be just like the Police.... they will be sloppy. Roo needs to stop bringing these bands out of retirement and work on getting some seriously big acts that still tour.... like Prince, even though he wouldnt do it for religious purposes probably, but shit like that would Rawk.
The Dead..... weak show, made abundantly evident by Touch of Grey opener and then basically a short fly by of "greatest hits". WSP.... always sucks, even if they did bring a "good" show it would still have sucked. Tom Petty.... might as well have spun his greatest hits, didnt do anything new or bring the noise like you should do if you are headlining one of the greatest festivals. Radiohead.... they did ok. Im not an enormous fan, but I can see that their die-hard fans really enjoyed it, so it wasnt a failure.
I dont see why they have to shoot for household names.... why not let beck Headline one night instead of having the 5pm show? You know that the Flaming Lips would go above and beyond what they already have done (which is by far always the best production at Roo every year) if they really headlined.
For me, Bonnaroo is a place to see bands I wouldnt usually get to see, and see bands I have never heard of before.... and when the "headliners" are playing, it is like the parade going on in DisneyWorld that gets all the kids and their parents out of the way so that the wait for Space Mountain is 3 minutes.
I have gone to every single Roo but one, and I have yet to ever stay for an entire headliners show. I find that the Which Stage usually has the best acts anyway.

I don't know what to say to that other than maybe you were in a shitty spot where the sound wasn't that great. I generally don't like how those gigantic shows sound on the main stage, but from where I was everything sounded pretty clear to me.
Some of their tracks do have long portions of "noise" in them, and these are the ones that I generally don't like. These tracks are the minority though.
To comment on their performance live in general because I've seen a few, I've seen a shitload of large shows and Tool was right up there under Phish as far as live shows go. Basically they put on one of the best rock shows I've experienced. The ones held in indoor venues are much better IMHO.
You should listen to Aenima, Undertow, and Lateralus. Give one of them a listen all the way through sometime if you feel like it.

I guess on the 11th we will find out, but I think that the Zep will have lost a step and show their age. If the majority of the reviews say that they are just as good or even close to their old shows, then I will be pumped.... but this is how it always pans out

seriously fuck that lineup. i can use it as an exscuse to finnally stop going to bonnaroo. i'd rather just watch a dvd of zepplin when they were in their twenties than try to pretend they still rock like they used to. reunion tours are sad.
as for metallica...i've seen them once before, when they didn't suck so bad, and i get the feeling that once you've seen them play a show you've pretty much seen them all.
i hope that lineup is a complete hoax. but i guess it's better than having WSP headline again. i'm so sick of wsp's bullshit at bonnaroo.

[edit] i wasn't far behind the sound board.. the sound should be pretty crisp there. not an issue of the sound itself.. it's the music... since i've seen other acts on the same stage.
if i didn't like portions of those albums that i did hear.. why would i want to listen to them straight through?
i'm not spewing out nonsense due to not listening.. i'm spewing out personal opinion based on what i've heard.. there's no reason for me to re-try this band... they hold nothing special, imo.
if their show is one of the greatest live shows you've seen.. you need to go to more shows.

Metallica at bonnaroo? Unspeakable. That would totally ruin the entire festival. I had a blast at this past Roo, and was really looking forward to the next one, but if those are the types of band they're going to start bringing in I think it will totally ruin the atmosphere of the place.
I don't have anything against Metallica, but Metallica at Bonnaroo? Ugh...
EDIT: It's more the fact that most of the people I've talked to that are big into Metallica are assholes. And thats what I like about places like Bonnaroo. There aren't that many assholes. Metallica would bring alot of them.

I just hope they get George Clinton for a late-night set. I wouldn't see Metallica, and Zep would probably be less entertaining than a lot of the artists, for me at least. Still cool though.
