if metallica kept it trill, and rocked a bunch of their old content, i'd have a blast. chances are they wouldnt though, and the thought of standing next to bubba with a mullet while they play some mediocre tunes would be a drag.
i duno, it'd be sick if they flew in a helicopter over the crowd and opened up with ONE though..

im not much of tool fan, but they were ok. hell i wasnt really there for the headliners anyway. they put on a good show and all, i got into it, but compared to dozens of other bands that played that weekend, tool is barley worth mentioning.
same with radiohead in 06, and i happened to enjoy tom petty, sure it was basicly a greatest hits, but what else did u want? they def did jam a few times during the show.
that being said, id be dissapointed in led zep played. i think they are totally over rated. and dont count on them playing either, it seems that paige is setting up a tour with allison krausse next summer, so he'll be busy. this time last year everyone was certain pearl jam was headling bonnaroo, and look how that turned out.
also the metallica rumor has already been disproved.

I barely saw any of the bands I originally intended to see. The shows I enjoyed most were bands I had never heard until then. Manu Chao was a great example, I had never really listened to any of his music until that show, and I was amazed. By far the best show I saw there, seconded by the Brazilian Girls who I had also never heard of until Roo came around.

Yoschie99 said:i wasn't far behind the sound board.. the sound should be pretty crisp there. not an issue of the sound itself.. it's the music... since i've seen other acts on the same stage.
if i didn't like portions of those albums that i did hear.. why would i want to listen to them straight through?
i'm not spewing out nonsense due to not listening.. i'm spewing out personal opinion based on what i've heard.. there's no reason for me to re-try this band... they hold nothing special, imo.
if their show is one of the greatest live shows you've seen.. you need to go to more shows.
Well, I think you aren't giving Tool enough credit, although I don't think I'd ever want to trip to them given their darker sound and often disturbing lyrics. Musically, however, their music really is quite complex, and they use time signatures that add even more complex rythms to their songs. From wikipedia: "A component of Tool's song repertoire relies on the use of odd meter time signatures."
Regardless, I don't think Tool is a good match for Bonnaroo, and I don't think they'd sound good at an outdoor venue. They didn't sound too good at the ampitheatre type venue either. Probably a concert hall would be the only way to get quality sound.
