Well that is just a rumor, probably without any real facts behind it at all.

I've also heard of U2. Just another rumor tho.

booo!

zep would be cool.. but metallica? seriously.. who's next, the foo fighters? jet?

it sucks that a festival like this builds it's name off the jam, psychedelic rock scene.. and then spirals into mediocrity.. radiohead & tom petty were borderline last year... this year w/ Tool and The Police was also pretty bleh for headlining talent... Metallica would be a total shit booking, imo.

yos-

Led Zrppelin = +2000 dollars ticket increase and Metallica = -1500 dollars ticket decrease

Either way, 70's Zeppelin and the old metallica is far better then either one now.

this year they had TOOL. which is some dumb harder shit that is totally against the Original Roo Fan's attitude. Mettalica would suck to go see.I'd probably skip that show

Led ZEp would be the coolest band ever to play there, just ahaead of RAdiohead.

U2, im not a big fan of. would like someone else over them.

U2 has metallica syndrome... a band that WAS amazing and then eqponentially started to suck

Metallica
U2

other good examples of Metallica Syndrome:

Foo Fighters
Red Hot Chili Peppers

I would be very disappointed if Metallica played at 'roo. I never really listened to any Radiohead so I went to their show and only stayed for two songs. I was very unsatisfied after hearing them hyped for so long. I dont really know if I would want Zep either. They made good music but they just dont really fit the bill in my eyes. Oh well, if the 'roo lineup sucks i'll just go to the echo project.

Radiohead has great music but I guess they're playing more of their chill stuff at concerts.. which doesn't make for the best songs. They should stick to playin their more rockin' stuff on stage

Wow finally someone that agrees with me. I don't understand the obession with radiohead a lot of people seem to have.
Yeah ok, they have made some pretty decent tunes... but I find the vast majority of their stuff very melodramatic and just plain fucking depressing. And that's coming from someone that trips to death metal sometimes. But I listen to radiohead tripping it makes me want to just strangle myself.

Metallica was cool in the 80s. After Bob Rock and the Black Album they stopped being a good band. 'Nuff said.

Radiohead is my fav active band (Orbital my all time fav), but even I'll admit that lately their stuff has gotten, not so much melancholic, but too wussy....

I miss the old rockin' R'head. Even Hail to the Thieves had some songs I'd crank up in the car by myself.

Orbital started to suck towards the end too. They should have quit after In Sides.

It really is. Like as if it's not bad enough you're playing 2.5 notes a minute (in E Minor), the guy has to sing in the most screeching, depressing.. I-want-to-blow-my-brains-out-but-I'm-too-tired-to-pull-the-trigger-and-you-should-too kind of way.

I saw Metallica in '04 or '05 and they did play a lot of older tunes. They even opened with "Blackened", which is a great opener in my opinion. James's voice does not sound the same on the thrashier stuff, but most "purist" Metallica fans would still enjoy the show.

That's basically what I said. Master of Puppets was their best album by far, IMO. But Bob Rock produced the black album, and that's also when they chopped their hair off. That was a much different album but still good.. also the last good album they produced.

I guess I qualify as one of the "original roo fans" since I was there the first three years, and I'm going to have to COMPLETELY disagree with you on the comment about Tool.  I know not everyone is into them because they can get pretty heavy, but they are a fucking amazing and complex band that appeals to a wide variety of people, and especially people who trip I've found.  They put on a sick show at roo and and everywhere else I've seen them.  It's just simply not "some dumb hard shit".  I just really hate it when people completely disregard a band just because they are a bit heavy.  I mean, how about a little variety in your music?

While I do agree that having U2 or Metallica at bonnaroo would be pretty lame, I'm really sick of all the people talking about the music  changing at bonnaroo.  I know that in the beginning they were catering pretty much exclusively to the jam scene, but over the years they have  turned it into something much better and more interesting than that.  Most people that I know who are into the "jam scene" have a wide variety of musical tastes and I think it's awesome how bonnaroo has been trying to accommodate as many as they can.

I will say that The Police was a lame choice though for last year.  It did give me some time for a little nap though.

each to their own, i guess..

i thought Tool's show at 'roo last year was one of the worst live performances i've ever seen/heard. Couldn't distinguish *anything*... it's just a mash-up of noise.. call that talent if you want. And, supposedly they're sooo psychadelic live... they had some shitty 4'x4' visual screens on the sides of the stage and a few martin lights, or whatever they were... i've seen better visuals and lights at shitty warehouse parties.

I really don't understand tool or radiohead's appeal, musically... but, radiohead was a far better performance than tool, for sure.

Screw all these super-rock bands headlining, anyways... just give good bands headlining slots but let them play for like 4 hours... people are going to go to 'roo regardless at this point.. and who really cares if attendance falls off by 10k or so... more comfortable atmosphere, as i see it.

Metallica would suck to see at Bonnaroo. Now Zeppelin, say whatever you want, would be a dream come true. Even if you don't like them you have to admit how ledgendary and important they were rock music.

I saw Tool at Lolapalooza 97. They were awesome. It didn't sound anything like a mashup of noise.. then again.. i haven't really heard any of their music past Aenima.

And I don't think you can go wrong with Zep

i should have said "modern super-rock bands" since i already said zeppelin would be cool.

i'll give any music a chance.. have listened to at least a portion of every Tool album... i'm just left going, "ok, where's this amazing band?" the show at 'roo was just that.. a mash-up of noise... couldn't understand a word sung, a chord played, a drum beat hit.. it was like if you take a synth, and put the filter on "noise"

I hope metallica shows up for Roo... then I will sell eggs and tomatoes inside the gate for all the hippies to buy and throw at them.

Look, I like the Zep just as much as your next guy, but Roo needs to stop letting these has beens headline. It has always been a let down. Do you think Led Zeppelin will really be a good show? sure, I would go just to say I got to see them.... but it will be just like the Police.... they will be sloppy.
Roo needs to stop bringing these bands out of retirement and work on getting some seriously big acts that still tour.... like Prince, even though he wouldnt do it for religious purposes probably, but shit like that would Rawk.

The Dead..... weak show, made abundantly evident by Touch of Grey opener and then basically a short fly by of "greatest hits".
WSP.... always sucks, even if they did bring a "good" show it would still have sucked.
Tom Petty.... might as well have spun his greatest hits, didnt do anything new or bring the noise like you should do if you are headlining one of the greatest festivals.
Radiohead.... they did ok. Im not an enormous fan, but I can see that their die-hard fans really enjoyed it, so it wasnt a failure.

I dont see why they have to shoot for household names.... why not let beck Headline one night instead of having the 5pm show?
You know that the Flaming Lips would go above and beyond what they already have done (which is by far always the best production at Roo every year) if they really headlined.

For me, Bonnaroo is a place to see bands I wouldnt usually get to see, and see bands I have never heard of before.... and when the "headliners" are playing, it is like the parade going on in DisneyWorld that gets all the kids and their parents out of the way so that the wait for Space Mountain is 3 minutes.

I have gone to every single Roo but one, and I have yet to ever stay for an entire headliners show. I find that the Which Stage usually has the best acts anyway.

I don't know what to say to that other than maybe you were in a shitty spot where the sound wasn't that great. I generally don't like how those gigantic shows sound on the main stage, but from where I was everything sounded pretty clear to me.

Some of their tracks do have long portions of "noise" in them, and these are the ones that I generally don't like. These tracks are the minority though.

To comment on their performance live in general because I've seen a few, I've seen a shitload of large shows and Tool was right up there under Phish as far as live shows go. Basically they put on one of the best rock shows I've experienced. The ones held in indoor venues are much better IMHO.

You should listen to Aenima, Undertow, and Lateralus. Give one of them a listen all the way through sometime if you feel like it.

I guess on the 11th we will find out, but I think that the Zep will have lost a step and show their age.
If the majority of the reviews say that they are just as good or even close to their old shows, then I will be pumped.... but this is how it always pans out

seriously fuck that lineup. i can use it as an exscuse to finnally stop going to bonnaroo. i'd rather just watch a dvd of zepplin when they were in their twenties than try to pretend they still rock like they used to. reunion tours are sad.

as for metallica...i've seen them once before, when they didn't suck so bad, and i get the feeling that once you've seen them play a show you've pretty much seen them all.

i hope that lineup is a complete hoax. but i guess it's better than having WSP headline again. i'm so sick of wsp's bullshit at bonnaroo.

Metallica at bonnaroo?  Unspeakable.  That would totally ruin the entire festival.  I had a blast at this past Roo, and was really looking forward to the next one, but if those are the types of band they're going to start bringing in I think it will totally ruin the atmosphere of the place.

I don't have anything against Metallica, but Metallica at Bonnaroo?  Ugh...

EDIT: It's more the fact that most of the people I've talked to that are big into Metallica are assholes.  And thats what I like about places like Bonnaroo.  There aren't that many assholes.  Metallica would bring alot of them.

I just hope they get George Clinton for a late-night set.  I wouldn't see Metallica, and Zep would probably be less entertaining than a lot of the artists, for me at least.  Still cool though.

if metallica kept it trill, and rocked a bunch of their old content, i'd have a blast. chances are they wouldnt though, and the thought of standing next to bubba with a mullet while they play some mediocre tunes would be a drag.

i duno, it'd be sick if they flew in a helicopter over the crowd and opened up with ONE though..

im not much of tool fan, but they were ok. hell i wasnt really there for the headliners anyway. they put on a good show and all, i got into it, but compared to dozens of other bands that played that weekend, tool is barley worth mentioning.

same with radiohead in 06, and i happened to enjoy tom petty, sure it was basicly a greatest hits, but what else did u want? they def did jam a few times during the show.

that being said, id be dissapointed in led zep played. i think they are totally over rated. and dont count on them playing either, it seems that paige is setting up a tour with allison krausse next summer, so he'll be busy. this time last year everyone was certain pearl jam was headling bonnaroo, and look how that turned out.

also the metallica rumor has already been disproved.

:yesnod:  I barely saw any of the bands I originally intended to see.  The shows I enjoyed most were bands I had never heard until then.  Manu Chao was a great example, I had never really listened to any of his music until that show, and I was amazed.  By far the best show I saw there, seconded by the Brazilian Girls who I had also never heard of until Roo came around.

Well, I think you aren't giving Tool enough credit, although I don't think I'd ever want to trip to them given their darker sound and often disturbing lyrics. Musically, however, their music really is quite complex, and they use time signatures that add even more complex rythms to their songs. From wikipedia: "A component of Tool's song repertoire relies on the use of odd meter time signatures."

Regardless, I don't think Tool is a good match for Bonnaroo, and I don't think they'd sound good at an outdoor venue. They didn't sound too good at the ampitheatre type venue either. Probably a concert hall would be the only way to get quality sound.
