After thinking about it today, i think that its not as useless as you say it is to ponder the problem at hand.

Indeed, i think the answer to this question is much less important than the thought process that you go through to try to answer it.

Its a problem that makes you think "out of the box". By making you try to put consciousness (sound) where there is none (deserted forest), it actually makes you meditate on the nature of consciousness itself.

It makes a vibration. For it to make a sound a person has to be there, because sound is percieved by humans and animals. Now a better question would be does the tree hear itself? When the wind blows how does the tree hear vibrations. When the branches move the tree must have something inside it's root base. I don't know exactly but it's all connected to the earth as we are connected to the tree. The symbiotic balance of the tree, maybe the earth's core is the brain here. Or maybe the sun's core.
