Fish tank air pump question:

Hey all.  So i bought a dual output fish tank air pump from PetCetera the other day.  Tried it out last night and the output just seems pretty wimpy...albeit i was expectin some hardcore airflow, but from what i've heard just one output from a dual output pump should be enough to keep the air moving in a terrarium (will have it on 24/7 most likely).

My rubbermaid is 76L (20gallons) and the pump says it's 4.5watts, 3.5PSU, 3800CC/Min...(also is recommended for 20gallon tanks).

This pump good? Will i want both air outputs going into my one terrarium?  Just one?  Thanks :smile:

That'll work. I reccomend using both outputs.

hahaha....sweet! thanks for the one minute reply puscle :laugh:  hoping to put them thru waterbottles with airstones and get some nice humidity that way...will have some perlite on the bottom but will see if i can get the humid without wetting it :smile:  We'll see!

i really only want the air pump for air circulation...so i want to have the air coming in at the top of the terrarium with CO2 drainage holes low down...an experienced dude suggested that i run the air through airstones in a water bottle and then have the air output continue from the the bottle...a little bit of cleaning and humidification of the air that way...seems like a simple enough addition to my setup that should help out...we'll see!

If you only want it for air circulation, I dont see why you need airstones in a bottle of water, just make a small box with your air pump in it with filter discs on the box so only clean air is pumped in.

I am looking at getting an air pump myslef. I went to PetSmart
today to look and they had both submersable and external
with tubes. Which is better and how should I hook it up?
Darkfly are you suggesting just letting it blow the air right into
the container with now airstones or water?

I don't think you should need a submersible pump (they're prolly way pricier and you don't need the pump underwater).

What i'm gonna do is have a small rubbermaid all sealed up with some micron magic discs over a couple holes so clean air can get into the container. Have my pump running in there. Now just for air circulation you can tube from the pump to your terrarium and you're set. I'm planning on having an intermediate step of going into a waterbottle (with H20+H2O2) to an airstone, and then having another tube out of the bottle to the terrarium...that'll get a bit of moisture into the air and ensure that it's clean (which it should be anyways). With this method i'm hoping that between the air pumping in and the moisture from my casing layer that i should barely have to mist my casings or wet my perlite to maintain a nice rH level. We'll see i guess.

This is what I was thinking, tell me what you think. I was going to get an external pump, put it in a container with holes and filter discs for clean air, then run my tube into the terrarium split it with a T connector to get two tubes and run each tube w/ an airstone, one to each of two smaller open containers with H202 solution in it. These would be placed on separte ends of my terrarium on top of my perlite but under a wire screen where my cakes or casings would set.
Also where is the best placement for C02 release holes, Top or bottom sides?

your pump rig sounds fine to me. CO2 is heavier than air so it'll sink to the bottom of a terrarium -- thus it's best to have CO2 drain holes low down on the sides (or maybe even the bottom if your terrarium is somehow raised). This is why i want my air input to be high up in my rig -- so air will be pushed downwards and out the bottom...hopefully the air exchange will be good!

I had considered that but didn't know how best to accomplish it. Are you just going to dangle your tubes into the container and let them blow or are you going to setup some kind of distribution tube or something?

If you're doing casings with perlite for humidification there would be no need for bubblers. In fact this may provide too much humidity, at least for casings. Plain old air lines dangling above the casings with outlet holes drilled just above the perlite layer works very well.
