dual use of the fish tank heater?

Reaching the point where I need to construct a terrarium. IT's cold in my house most of the time around 60 maybe lower. I only have one fish tank heater and was going to use that to help raise the temp in my terrarium. Can I keep the jars in there too? I know the terrarium is supposed to be at a lower temp range than the incubator. CAn I just keep the terrarium at room temp? Is there an effecient way to use both... has anyone had this same issue or do I just need to sportthe 20 bucks for a new heater? I am going to use perlite. I am goign by MMGG and it's says drip shield should be used. IS this actually nessesry or is it outdated? I hear to put vasoline on the top to keep the water droplets from hitting the cakes. Will this be suffecient. Sorry I know there are a lot of questions here.

No. You can't put your jars in the terrarium as mycelium colonizes in the dark. Introducing them to light might trigger pinning which would be disaster with uncolonized cakes. You can keep your terrarium at room temp depending on what your room temperature is. I use a seperate fish tank heater to heat my terrarium due to low room temp... Drip shield is personal preferance, it is mainly used if your are going to be misting in the terrarium. DO NOT use petroleum products near your mushies.

will they still grow at a low room temp or so I have to get the heater?

You can; use a styrofoam cooler for use immediately after innoculation; put the fishtank heater in a jar in the middle; this will warm that cooler; put the fruiting cakes in another styrofoam cooler; run a tube from a fishtank air pump into the jar with the heater; run another tube out to the other cooler, which will be supplying it with warm moist fresh air; you still have to remove the lid from the second cooler to fan and supply light
Caveats: you have to seal the water jar so it will pump air out and you have to add h2o2 to the water in the jar...

this sounds like a great idea. What do you mean by seal the second jar? I'm sorry I don't completely understand. I am trying to visualize it. I don't have a fish tank pump but I could get one. I heard they are inexpensive. Could you help clarify a bit? Thanks again for the idea.

if the jar you are pumping the air into isn't sealed, you won't get any moist air pumped out of the jar and into your grow chamber...the positive pressure air would just leak out into the incubation cooler. i saw a sketch of that setup recently, but can't remember where
or just get a cooler weather strain that will fruit at a lower temp

won't it be sucking water?

air pump --> jar in incubator --> warm moist air --> grow chamber
It may "suck" but its not supposed to...

why is it sucking from the jar and not just from some random place in the incubator. Does a fish tank pump suck water or just air?

An air pump sucks air out of the atmosphere and pumps it into the fish tank water to provide oxygen to the water. You use it to pump air into the water jar, which in turn is pushed through tubing out of the jar and into the other grow chamber.

so just get a random piece of tube and put it from one rubbermaid to the other? Ok I think I get it now. That's why the jar has to be sealed so no other air can escape. Will this allow enough heat to be released in the incubator or do you just get two tubes?

this is how i interpeted it.......fish pump hose to sealed jar with heater with hose underwater, jar is placed in styrofoam cooler. another hoseis fixed above the water in the jar and that hose leads to the terrarium for fresh air exchange and humidity... i thinks that;s it ya? you could even build a filter box around the pump to clean the air.

but if the jar is sealed in the incubator how is any heat going to be released in there?

The radiant heat from the jar heats the air inside the cooler, and you can get more direct heat transfer but putting the pf jars up against the heater jar...trust me, the aquarium heat is designed to provide heat to a much bigger water supply, and does a sufficient job
For about $10 you can try it yourself.....that's what I suggest
