Fluffiness or Practicality?
    #3973743 -

Seems most here lean more towards unsubstantiated fluff and entertainment such as aliens, reincarnation, telekinesis, end-of-world stuff, et al; rather than more practical issues and techniques for real self development.

Believing in far-fetched ideas seems to be mostly a postponement of or substitute for change, as adopting a wacky belief requires no effort or discipline and is very non-threatening to the ego.

I believe it is a necessary process that will either lead the unable to misery, or the able to a path of self-discovery. If you do not internally have what it takes to truly see yourself and the world for yourself and rely on your own "power" then you simply do not and you will flock to other sets of belief. I believe that suffering causes an internal motive to take action, thus the wisdom of suffering being an important part of life. In this case it is the suffering of seeking and finding nothing that will hopefully cause one to not be afraid of relying on their self for happiness among other things through courage, discipline, and confidence in their own capabilities.

Why one or the other? Go for both if you can. having practicality and the frivolous fluff is total cush! My car is piratical and full of frivolous fluff for example.

If it had to be one OR the other, would I rather have a pretend Lamborghini or a real Ford Escort? Hmmmmmmmmmm, Okay you got me, I'd take the Escort.

I say, practicality first and then suit yourself with the fluff. I mean, rubber boots are practical for the slush but fur lined and trimmed rubber boots are more warm and comfy.

It is one thing to look into the knowledge given to us by those in the past, such as these 'far-fetched' idea's and to look into it's essence and take what it useful and leave what is not. It is quite another to relate to some aspect of it and then take everything in that set of belief as absolutely true without even having the experience to found such belief on in which it was written from.

Words are simply words, some of the most relative objects there are. It is each individual who projects their meaning upon them. A projection born from experience. It is the experience which matters, not the words.

Fuck wading... use a boat. But mind your propulsion system (be it oars, outboard motor, turbojet)... we don't want to splash any "philosophy" all over our Sunday whites.

that's a good, insightful point.

but isn't fluff in the eye of the beholder? And practicality, too?

most here lean more towards unsubstantiated fluff ... rather than more practical issues and techniques for real self development.

I don't know though, I have some stuff that I have examined pretty thoroughly (or so I lead myslf to believe) which you would probably think of as fluff and impractical, but which I consider to be fairly 'practical' and relevant, whatever those words mean. I am, thus far, satisfied with most of my beliefs---i.e., my beliefs are satisfactory, and satisfy me. What's more 'Good', satisfaction, or practicality? Who says?

(I may simply be playing devil's advocate here--I'm not sure. But it doesn't matter.)

yes, I think it is easier and more attractive for someone to purchase some newage book and believe whatever "aliens, reincarnation, telekinesis, end-of-world stuff, et al" stuff they encounter than to dedicate oneself to, say, joining a Buddhist monastery or starting an ayahuasca church...

Yes, i agree. These actions of indulging in fanasies of aliens, reincarnation, telekinesis, end-of-world stuff are all frivolous activities. Frivolousness refers to the extra and unnecessary mental and physical acts with which we keep ourselves busy in order not to see what actaully is happening in a situation. Whenever there is a frivolous emotional situation and concept growing out of it, then this should be extinguished with a direct blow. The objective of this action is to squash the frivolousness, the unwillingness to see things as they actually are, so their maybe a possibility for real spiritual development.

What about a flip-fluffer?

Practicality.
