question about mycelium growth

today afoaf started casing(1st legitimate time) he broke the cake apart ready to put on top of damp verm. and how can u tell if it was colonized enough, the outside and bottoms of jars are completely colonized, but when broken open, he couldnt make a sure decision if it was completely colonized, like close examination u can see mycelium, but how white should it be on the inside??? and also how small should the cake be broken up into when spread ontop of damp verm???

Thats one of the reason's we tell the newbie to wait about 5-7 days after the jars look fully col. The inside should be white, just like the outside. It maybe to late, but you can use this for future refrence...if it ever seems like that agian...try (carefully) to remove the uncol. portion of the cake, and then case it like that.

Almost forgot....the cake can be crumbled or sliced. If you crumble them, then the size of the piece's should be about the size of pea's or marble's. If you slice, then the size should be 1/4-1/2". There are many ways :)

ok thank you, the inside was white but not really super white(sorry no pic) and also i have a question, do u have to be really carefull handling the cakes while breaking them apart?? thank you, the good thing is that i only attempted to case 2 of the jars(both amazonian), so theres still 9 to case(6 b+ the rest amazonian)(one got contaminated) so i will give em some time or whatever, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

i don't think it really has to be as white as the outside..i just broke up three 75% colonized cakes for casing and the little chunks looked more brown than white. put the pieces on top of some damp verm and applied casing...put it in my incubator and 4 days later the entire casing was covered with fluffy white mycelium...search the forums for my post called "pics of casing...first time grow...ready to innitiate pinning?" to see how it turned out.
