Hey it's me again. I'm really sorry for asking these dumb ass questions, but it's my first time growing. What do you mean by crumble and case? Is it destroying the cakes and putting them in some sort of container. My terranium is a glass fish tank about 2feet long and 1 foot in height. It has a plexiglass shield on top of my cakes. And I think it does the job. It also has a plastic cover that seems to be tight enough. But I feel like it might be the weakest component in my terranium. Thanks for helping out.....

You take the cakes out of the jars and crumble them up into small chunks. This is not destroying the cake but rather preparing it to be cased. It is then lined with a bottom and top layer of the material of your choice (vermiculite, peat moss, perlite, oyster shell, etc.) or a mixture of any casing materials. Read up on casing in the grow/find section.

This problem could probably be resolved by a quick search of the archives, but since I'm here anyway... 'Casing' means that you crumble up your cakes, and lay them in an even layer along the bottom of your fruiting chamber. You then prepare a casing medium, whether it be dung, peat moss, vermiculite, straw, or probably countless others, and spread an even layer about 1" thick over the colonized substrate. The mycelial network in the substrate will then colonize this new casing layer, and not only keep the substrate from drying out, but provide a cropping surface for the mushrooms to fruit from. I'm sure a quick archive search will provide you with countless casing recipies, but for your first time, straight vermiculite works perfectly well, though dosent provide any added nutrients to the mycelium. Any composted material such as dung or peat moss is much preferrable, as it gives the mushrooms another food source to thrive on, and in the case of dung, if pasteurized properly (another process alltogether), also contains live organisms which prevent the grown of unwanted molds, while coexisting comfortably with the mycelium.

Get your cakes when fully colonised and also a large ziplock baggie... Basically tip the cake out fo the jar and into the ziplock baggie and crumple it into small ballish type shapes. Prepare a plastic container with maybe a layer of verm or something down the bottom, and lay out your crumbled bits of cake over this evenly, then cover with sterilised casing - try peatmoss/verm and shell grit or large grade verm. you want your casings moist but not wet - as you can always increase the dampsness of a casing with spraying, but you cant make it drier if its sopping...
