Peyote Seedlings Drying- advice?

When I first planted my lophophora seeds, a fungus started taking over (I soaked the soil way too much). Basically, I aired the pots out a little everyday to reduce the moisture a little until they were really nice, and the fungus had disappeared. Now, I am 2.5 weeks in and the pots are on the dry side, the amount of condensation on the lids is small, and the soil doesn't look very moist.

I read that you need to keep these humid, slowly decreasing the humidity until 10 weeks or so. What would you do at 2.5 weeks? Water them very slightly from the bottom and keep the covers on? Spray the surface with water gently? Or would you let them dry out and just remove the covers much earlier than the 10 week time and then give them a real watering.

take out organics. i use straight sand personally. i keep tehm covered untill teh 2 month mark roughly. give or take depending on how the plant looks.

i gently water from the top, jsut gotta be carefull not to tip them over and up root them. although it nto a big deal.

So you would just lift off the cover and spray them, close it again until two months? Sounds good.

I used a mix of a cactus potting mix (some organic) and perlite at a 1:1 ratio. The seedlings look great after 2.5 weeks. I have another fifty seeds to plant and I think I will use the same. My initial problem was just far too much water, so I let them air out a little to slow down the fungus and dry them a little.

Do you think I should mix any fertilizer with the spray, or just wait until the first real watering with the covers off at two months?

i usually wait about a month before thinking about fertilizing (keeping in mind i use sand...your mix may have some goodies in it already).

cant realyl put a time on it. you really jsut need to read your plants. if they start getting soft, dry them up. if they start looking sad and wrinkled wet em up. at this size it can be hard to tell teh diff.

at this size i find that they can pretty much live off of high humidity and almost no actuall waterings.

I think I will spray them and close the covers, then let them dry out around two months. Then I will bottom soak them with some fertilizer.

The reason you get the fungus might be because there is too much organic material in your soil mix. When you have an enclosed moist enviroment that is when fungi and mold will move in. Perlite seems to attract a type of green moss (that is not harmfull to plants) Next time try adding more sand to the store bought cacti soil mix. I watered my baby peyotes every two to three weeks but they were planted in almost pure sand and it drys out alot faster. I use a syringe to water. I jiggle it back and forth to make small water droplets come out, like rain. Then i dry the water off the seedlings.

The fungus was white, like wisps of cotton, but it is all gone now.

I had read that during the summer you water once a week or so, is that right? Of course, I will have to make sure that the soil is dry, but I thought sand would dry really quick. Did you buy sand in like Home Depot, or beach sand?

Yeah sand does dry quite quick and that is kind of the point :wink: You don't want the peyote roots constantly sitting in moisture for really long periods of time. They like to be watered and then dry out before being watered again. Although when they first sprout and for a month or so after that you will want to keep it moist most of the time. As they get bigger you can span out the drying out times. I think most types of sand will work as long as it is just plain sand.
